Simi Valley Half Marathon Race REVIEW

by SkinnyRunner on July 15, 2011

So this is a little late in coming….

This was the inaugural SV half marathon along with a 5k and 10k.  It was held on June 26th in a park in Simi Valley which is outside of LA.

Early registration was $20 for the 5k and $45 for the half and went up to $65 for the half.  About 600 people totaled participated in all of the events.  Also, there wasn’t any race registration, like a lot of smaller events have.

The half marathon started at 8am and the shorter races a half hour later, and it was already getting hot.  It would have been nice for the races to start an hour earlier.

I had a friend pick up my packet so I’m not sure what the expo was like but I’m assuming it was pretty small.  We did get a little bag and cotton t shirt along with a few flyers and a sample or two.

Even though there was less than 300 people running the half, they did have chip timing which was surprising but nice.

There were very few porta potties; thankfully the line wasn’t too long or I woulda had to find a tree or something:

The race started on time and we took off for the bike path where the whole run was run.

There were a few parts of the bike path that were dirt but most everything was paved and flat.

I personally found the course really boring – it was a couple out-and-backs and basically was the same thing over and over.

They did do a good job at the water stations.  There was water and Gatorade about every 2 miles, no gels or anything though.

There also weren’t hardly any spectators which was to be expected.

Overall I just thought it was a boring, hot race – there weren’t any problems with the race itself, but it wasn’t anything memorable either.  Well, besides our glasses:

I came in 2nd female overall and 1st in my age division so I got a sweatshirt as a prize which was nice.  And everyone was really friendly, but I doubt I’d pay $65 again to run it.

After the race there were a few booths handing out smoothies, bagels, water bottles, and FRS drinks.

Overall I’d give the race a 5.92 out of 10.  If I was in town, I’d pay the cheapest registration to run it but not much more than that.

The glasses were probably the highlight of that race. Congrats on the sweatshirt though! I’d actually like that award!

True, I would have liked the sweatshirt, but nothing to look at for 13 miles? yikes! I ran a small race like that without music, and no spectators or anything to look at.. it was the pits!

Yuck I hate running on bike paths. Boring, hot races are the worst! Nice job on the 2nd place though, and thanks for the review. Love the glasses too!
