Simi Valley Half Marathon Race Recap

by SkinnyRunner on June 26, 2011

Last night we stayed at our friends Reese and Jim’s in Calabasas so I didn’t even have to get up that early for the 8am race start.  I got up at 6:30am, grabbed a cup of coffee and hit the road a little after 7am.

117

I won’t be in town for the 4th of July so Pam, who was also running the race, suggested we dress in red, white and blue hence the Nike soccer socks.  Ross, $1.99 by the way.

116

I got to the start around 7:40am, ate 3/4 of a Clif bar, made one quick porta trip, found Pam and then it was time to go.  This was the inaugural race so it was a relatively small half marathon with about 200 half runners and 600 total.

121

It was already warm out, and I knew I was pretty much going to die and be uncomfortable the whole time.  But hey, misery loves company:

120

Right before the start I saw this guy toeing the line wearing a full body Luchador spandex outfit.  If I was going to be hot, he was gonna be hot boxing it the whole time in that tight thing.

124

125

We started right at 8am and if it were not for Pam, I would NOT have ran as fast as I did.  I would have started way way slower, but she pushed the pace from the start.  Our first mile was 7:26 and I was pretty sure I was among the living dead – I was already tired.

127

The course is all on a paved bike path in Simi Valley except for a few dirt sections.

It took me a solid 4 miles before I really felt like I got into the groove and I could breathe without struggling for air.

129

I think our second mile was around 7:35.  For an injured runner (Pam) and an out-of-shape runner (me) we were kicking some serious red, white, and blue.

The first 3 miles were horrible – they seemed to last forever and I couldn’t even imagine sustaining the pace that we were running.  But around mile 4 I started relaxing and feeling more at ease and just better in general.

130

I took a gel at mile 6 and just focused on staying with Pam and trying to talk enough so that she wouldn’t think I was anti-social.  Or worse, boring.

131

It was definitely getting warmer out, and I grabbed a water, Gatorade or both at every aid station.

Miles 6-8 seemed relatively easy; we were passing people while talking and having a good ‘ol time.  And…. then came the rest of the race.

Miles 9-12 were tough; it was hot and I was so ready to be done.  My body just isn’t accustomed to running that pace right now, and it was such an effort to keep going.

132

I just told myself to stay with Pam.  Honestly, she was a pacing savior – she was pushing it when I would have pulled back if I had been alone.

I took another gel at mile 10 and for the last 2 miles kept repeating the word “Stay” to myself…. stay at this pace, stay at this effort, stay right here and complete what you started.

 133

The last mile was pretty miserable: I almost felt a bit dizzy, but I pushed with the little energy I had left and finished in something like 1:38:20ish.  My garmin says 1:38:26, and Pam texted me the official results, but I left my phone at Reese’s house and I can’t find the results online.

I was first in my age division, 3rd woman and 20th overall; like I said, it was a SMALL race.  Pam came in 2nd in her division and 4th woman overall!!

134

It was about 80* when we finished.  sweat to the fest.

135

I ran faster than I thought I could because of Pam; I would have started much more conservatively if it had not been for her.  All thanks to Pam!

For right now where I am with my fitness and cardiovascular shape, I’m super happy with today’s results.  It was by far the hardest, hottest run I’ve done since I’ve been back home, but it felt good too… once it was done and I was sipping an ice cold mimosa. seriously.

What’d you do this weekend?  Anything crazy??

Sweet sunglasses! did you wear them the entire race?! The only crazy thing I did this weekend was a triathlon at Lake Padden. It wasn’t that crazy, but it was a ton of fun!

Your run looked super fun, I am loving the blue skirt and red socks..very festive! By the way, you have some great looking arms..how often do you lift along with all your running you do as well??

It’s a billion degrees this weekend, nice job in the HOT!

I baked and ate pastries like it was my JOB this weekend. And hit my highest mileage after a month off for an ankle injury. And cycled for the first time. Win-win-win.

Wow great job you guys! I hope to one day complete races with times like yours. I can’t even run a 10k right now in under 60min :(

Awh I was born and raised in Simi. That washy trail is my everyday run when I’m back home visiting. I’m glad you didn’t find it as boring as I do . . . or maybe you did and we’ll find out in your race review? :) Great time!

Thank god for friends that push you, right? I remember you saying that you enjoyed running alone, do you like it with people now?

Reply

SkinnyRunner June 26, 2011 at 6:11 pm

yeah occasionally i do. i still prefer running most of my runs alone (im a loser at heart) but i def like mixing it up and running with friends every so often.

you kicked it old school. way to go.

You and Pam kick ass! Nice job to both of you!

I love how you call yourself “out of shape” and then run a 1:38 half. HA!

The *only* thing I can hang with you in is the heat factor. Pretty sure it was 80 degrees when I started my 13-miler this am (at 5:15 am). Boo.

Damn you girls run fast! Good job… I know I’ll never read a “she pushed me and I couldn’t keep up” post from you!! :)

Congrats on an awesome, sweaty half! I love running with a buddy. They are the best to push you when you want to quit. Congrats to Pam too!

I love when people go to races themed. At my first marathon there was a guy running next to me dressed as a cow. He only ran the half and I was really depressed when he split off to his finish line. No more spectators yelling “eat more chicken!” :(

Michelle @ Crazy*Running*Legs June 26, 2011 at 6:37 pm

Pam is such a rockstar!!! I can’t even imagine running a mile at that pace (maybe half a mile). Congrats on a great race — especially since you are “out of shape!” Ha.

Holly (Faith, Food, Fitness) June 26, 2011 at 6:45 pm

I’m so impressed by your speed! When I sprint a mile it takes me about 7:45….I can’t imagine being able to run FASTER than that, let alone that fast for 13.1 miles!!!

Reply

Marilyn @ Lipgloss and Spandex June 26, 2011 at 6:55 pm

You and Pam are awesome! I did my third marathon this weekend. Sadly, it was my slowest :(

Reply

Nicely done, SR!

As for me, I ran the Seattle RnR half on Saturday. I PR’d with a time of 2:27, which I was THRILLED with, considering I wasn’t able to train as much as I should’ve. Oh, to someday be as fast as you…

Then for recovery today, I mowed my lawn. :) And watched tennis and soccer and BBQ’d hamburgers.

great recap! It’s really fun to watch you push it so hard to get back to your pre-fishing-job stamina. That’s one of the best parts of running, is when you really have to push and EARN it!

lucky to have such a great pacer. Does Pam know how famous she is and that all blog readers want one of her?

Reply

Allison June 26, 2011 at 8:13 pm

I want a Pam!

Pam and SR-Please come pace me at Heartbreak Ridge Half at Camp Pendleton in September. Pretty please!!! I want to run a 1:43.

You come too, RoseRunner. ;-)

This was a great wkd full of roadtrips, family, old friends, a concert, and relaxing all rolled into one!

We were pushing each other girl!! YOU FINISHED SO STRONG and I was hanging on to your skirt!! :)

Great re-cap chica!! ;) Your re-caps are where I started my love affair with you!! I wanted to throw cups of water on the guy that was running barefoot. I kept imagining how hot his feet must’ve been!! Maybe next year they’ll move the start time to 6:30 instead of 8am.

Good job! I ran the Rock n Roll 1/2 in Seattle with my mom and sister in law. My mom came in at 2:26, and I crossed the finish line with my SIL at 2:23 (it was her first 1/2 and I was REALLY out of shape due to lack of training). We wore our SR shirts and people LOVED them! Everyone kept yelling, “YEAH DON’T STOP!” It was great!

Great job, you guys!

That red top is nice – I think the cut of the arm holes is very flattering and makes you look fast! Oh, no, wait, running a 1:38 half makes you look fast.

love the glasses Pam. So patriotic! maybe thats how you run fast. It is brutaly hot out there. Way to sweat it out, literally. The race my hubs had in lubbock got up to 110F today. Lets just say medical was pretty busy. sheesh!

Hot races are hard stuff… not looking forward to Dallas summer races starting this weekend. Blech.

What did I do last weekend? Ran way way way too much for where I am post-marathon. Not so smart, but I feel fine, so hopefully didn’t hurt anything. Running over 18 miles “just because” is something I never thought I’d have in my vocabulary.

Wow, ok that is such a great time!!!! I been running marathons for years now but for some reason I never get faster. Wait, I know why I never get faster: I never push myself to train faster. It has something to do with not wanting to feel uncomfortable, hahaha. UGHHHhh! But I really want to shave a good 10-15 min off my next marathon. Will you please do a post on how to get faster??????

I know this is an older post, but thanks for this recap…I was looking up reviews of this race now that I’m in the area. I like small races because they are easy to get to and park at…but an 8am start is too late for a full-sun course in late June! It looks like the organizers realized that and bumped it up to a 7am start for this year.
