WORKOUT – Ran in Sitka 9.1 miles/1:14
This morning was the first time I’ve ever ran in Alaska while fishing. I left the boat around 7am before work started.
I love taking pictures of the two boats together; don’t they look rad together?
Some pictures from my run:
The boat harbor.
This is a retirement home for Alaskan pioneers I think.
The little main street.
Russian Orthodox church.
I managed to find the only house in Sitka that Jaymo would want; the boy likes his modern design…
Some things you might only see in Sitka:
A halibut carcass on the side of the road.
Roads with names like Halibut Point.![]()
Gravel baseball fields. This is what we played on growing up. You have to really want to win the game to slide into home.
Instead of Jazzy Java, you have Highliner Coffee. (A highliner is what ever boat wants to be: the top dog)
And lastly, something you might only see in Sitka: me.
Cooking up breakfast for everyone after my run.

haha…I knew you couldn’t leave the mizuno’s at “su casa!!”
Love the pictures!! The “TASSINGE” boat is the name significant to someone/something??
Looks beautiful (well except for the dead fish on the road). I’ve been meaning to ask – what’s the significance behind the Boat’s name “Taasinge”? Everything looks cool; I see you’ve got your coffee-mate on the boat! Be safe!
I know Tasinge is an island in Denmark.
I’m guessing her family’s Danish, or inherited the boat from someone who was.
youre right on the island! my grandfather bought the boat and thats what it was named. its considered bad luck to change a boats name so he never did and neither did my dad.
Love those views, so beautiful! Have a safe trip and keep posting more pictures
The fishing industry is very interesting! I feel like we are getting a behind the scenes view of how it all goes down.
So weird to see my town on your blog! Haha…hope you enjoyed your run, too bad you missed the beautiful weather here last week! And that home…is listed for $1,285,000…believe me, my husband and I wish we could afford it too!!! The inside is even more awesome than the outside.
Good luck with the fishing!!
aw, we’ve missed your posts! =)
You are so dedicated! I don’t get out much and don’t think I will ever find myself in that part of the country so thanks for sharing. It looks very different from the OC. It’s been rainy/windy here so you are not missing much.
haha! I knew you couldn’t leave the mizuno’s at “su casa!!”
Love the pictures!!

that house is sweet! the fish carcass made me laugh. Not sure why…
Alaska looks beautiful!
Love all the posts about the boat and Alaska, keep them coming! They are super interesting!
what’s the investment in capital (reese would be proud) to sponson a boat? i’m guessing it’s not cheap – what like 4 tons of halibut?
more than you would think…. a lot more.
Beautiful!!
I love seeing all the Alaska pictures! Does Taasinge stand for something?
Way to go on the run SR!
Glad you were able to get a good run in!!!
I’m loving all of the Alaska posts!!!!
Alaska looks so peaceful and beautiful! My dad has been there a few times for fishing trips and every time he comes home he talks about moving up there.
My mom’s best friends lives in Sitka. She loves it there. Enjoy
beautiful but it looks so COLD!
Such dedication! You’re awesome!
Love the photos! Glad you were able to get a run in!!
Beautiful photos…make me want to visit Alaska!
Hey SR! I’ve been following your website for a while now, but never posted. I just had to make a comment, I live in Juneau- it’s crazy to see you in Sitka! Will you come to Juneau? If so, let me know. Maybe we can fit a run in
I’m not crazy fast, but I’m training for my first half marathon and for the Klondike… anyhow, just wanted to shout out and give some Alaskan love to you.
unfortunately no, we won’t be in juneau… thanks for the offer though!
I love these Alaska/fishing posts, for whatever that’s worth to you. It’s like getting a glimpse of a completely different world.
Looks awesome! Glad you were able to blog. I was thinking I might have withdrawals : ) I channeled by inner SR and ran a 4:12 marathon on Sunday!
Please tell me you ran down the totem path at the national park?!? I worked there in the summers of 2007 and 2008 and it was my absolute favorite place to run. Also, the Fur Gallery used to have a fur thong in the window with a tag that read “for the man who has everything.”
The picture of downtown reminds me of that movie “the Proposal” I think the main guy’s family is supposed to own half of sitka or something.
These pictures are an amazing contrast to your usual CA shots! Still looks like a great run though!! Yay for Alaska posts!
Love these pictures. In sitka last year for a wedding and these are beautiful and bring back memories.
Gravel baseball fields?! Holy heck. What’s goin on in that town?
Thank goodness!!!! I was starting to go through SR withdrawals. Glad you made it to Alaska safely. Please keep locating wifi and land. Your humor really helps get through the long days.
Happy Fishing!
Dude, I totally want to move to Alaska and be a fisherwoman now…
Maybe it’s because I’m sitting here with my feet in an ice bath, but that looks so cold… beautiful but cold!
Sitka is cute- it reminds me of Kodiak! (The gravel baseball field does too. The one in ADQ has quite the name.) And… you think Halibut Point is an Alaskan street name? Try Poopdeck Ave. It really does exist here in Homer. Oh… why do I live here again?
That is exactly how I imagine half of Alaska looks (at least the populated half)! Totally a fishing town.
Okay, a few questions.
1. Why is there a halibut carcass outside?
2. Is halibut big in Sitka? I know that’s what you fish, but is everyone super into halibut?
3. What was really going on with your cuffed pants from that earlier post?
These are all serious questions. For real, I’m not just being a smart ass. I’m just dumb.
i have no idea why that carcass was there.
all of our halibut gets shipped to seattle where our buyer is and then a lot of it is sent overseas to japan or to costco. sitka is definitely a fishing town and pretty much any fishing town will buy whatever fish is for sale but it all gets shipped elsewhere.
those jeans are really, really long so i normally cuff them when im working or running around and they pretty much just look dopey.
so glad you’re posting from alaska! love these little insights, and your light hearted blog
I get so excited whenever I see ‘SkinnyRunner (1)’ in my Reader. Alaska looks amazing. This is coming from a Florida girl, so it definitely looks like a completely different world.
Your dad’s right, keep blogging about (and from) Alaska!!It’s definitely “extra-ordinaire”!!:)
Cool pics, fun to see your surroundings. Hope you’re having fun. When are you coming back? I’m this week’s Follow This Mother…check it out.

I went to Alaska last summer with Habitat for Humanity and LOVED every second. You must be really strong because I watch the peeps on the boats in Homer working and it tired me out.
I love the posts and pictures from Alaska. The boats and the fishing are fascinating to me. Please keep them coming and I hope you plan a post with lots of pictures of your family and crew in action fishing.
haha!! I knew you couldn’t leave your mizunos at “su casa!!”
Love all of the fishing pictures!! Soo neat!!
Great run!Very admirable that you still get those runs in while out on the road. Keep bloggin!
You make me want to go to Alaska! I cannot wait to hear about your fishing trip!
It looks cold.
Thanks for the Alaska post. I like learning more about your job.
I love seeing these updates from Alaska. I used to sail regularly and spent a lot of time on boats but NOTHING like this. It is really interesting to see what your life is like during fishing season!
Have you ever seen the movie The Proposal? Every time I read the word “sitka” i think of Sandra Bullock saying “siiiit-ka. sitka” lol
What a beautiful place! My favorite was the little main street.
Great photo of the boats! Be safe out there!
Yay!! I love the fishing posts, it’s so interesting…AND the Elmer posts!! You guys are all so cute.
Can you send some of your magical running fairy dust my way? I’m pathetic. Your blog makes me feel like a loser, lol. Yet, I’m addicted.
This is so interesting, I love these fishing posts! You need a second blog, skinnyfisherwoman. Alaska looks beautiful! So different from anything I’ve ever seen.
Alaska seems so badass! I can’t imagine playing on all of that gravel. Yikes. And I second skinnyfisherwoman. It’s catchy, like that halibut carcass on the side of the road …
Some contact with Skinny Runner, joy!!
I would love to go to that retirement home to check out all the old folks who moved to Alaska ages ago. My aunt/uncle/cousins lived out there for a while in Homer and Anchorage and I’ve always been fascinated with it.
I was so happy to see a post from SR!
Loving the photo-tour of Sitka. And it’s cool to see what your life is like when you’re out fishing. I think you should definitely win a most versatile blogger award for this!
Sitka…hmm…wasn’t that the city whats-his-face was supposed to be from, oh Ryan Renolds, in the proposal? Man, I need to get out more
Awesome pics!
I’ve decided that I don’t like when you’re fishing. My days are not filled with nearly as much distraction as they should be. Come back to land soon please. My sense of humor misses your posts!
Does anyone know how to change the picture on this thing? I’m not sure what that crazy red face is about
SkinnyRunner:
You can come back from Alaska now. You can stop being lazy and start posting again. I dont usually comment on your blog but I’ve been reading it for a year and a half, and you keep me inspired to run A LOT, so please feel free to come back and start posting soon!
Thanks,
Delurking Blog Reader “aka” Rachel
I miss you. I wish I had found you right AFTER your fishing trip.
I am obsessed with all of your thutt posts. I was training for my first marathon until last month. Got all the way to my 20 miler, then developed piriformis syndrome the next week. I am sad. Well, I WAS sad. The marathon has come and gone, I am slowly healing, and reading and re-reading your posts every freaking day, to give me motivation. Come back soon. Pretty please.
Waaaah!!! I miss you. This sucks.
I missed this post and just saw it!! Those pics are beautiful. I just saw an ad for a cruise to Alaska for &562 per person including all food. My new guy friend was just telling me that he wanted to do this.. We will see what he thinks of that

Woot! You posted!
Love the pictures of the boat.
great great job on your 9 miler run!! That is some serious dedication in that colder alaskan air! The town looks so cute too, I actually think the run could be pretty darn fun.
love that you cooked up everyone brekkie afterwards:)
