Do you ever do things just because in your mind they feel healthy even though they might not do squat? What am I talking about?!
Like taking vitamins. Do they really help? I don’t know, but I feel super healthy taking them. Or ordering the vegetarian salad (I’m not a vegetarian) somehow feels healthier than ordering the grilled chicken salad. Is it? I don’t know.
That’s the way I felt about this face mask I put on this morning. It probably did absolutely nothing but I felt like I was Sonya Dakar, skin specialist to the stars, taking care of my face. Well, until I looked in the mirror….
I received this face mask in a goody bag… even though it’s made for men.
I should have known better when I put it on and it looked like I had rubbed honey all over my face and felt like concrete. Where’s all the blue color?!?
Peel Off and Mess Free, that’s funny. Try peeling off honey from your face and tell me how mess free that is.
Oh well, you win some, and you look like you stuck your face in the toilet bowl in some.
Can anyone recommend a good face mask?

Let’s have some Cat lady Blogs!
Today’s running wonder is Kristy from TheLongRoad.
I document the good, bad, and ugly of marathon training. I started running in 2002 because it was something I always wanted to do. Seven marathons and numerous half marathons later, I can honestly say I’m addicted.
I love to talk about running and train family and friends for races. I made it official by becoming an RRCA-certified running coach in April 2010. I hope to begin a coaching business training runners anywhere from a 5K to a marathon.
My ultimate goal is to qualify and run the Boston Marathon. I dream about the day when I cross the finish line with a BQ time on my Garmin! Every marathon I train for takes me closer and closer to that dream. My PR is 3:58 (October 2010) so I still have a ways to go but I’ll get there.
I live just outside Philly with my husband Matt and our fur baby, Hawk. Hawk is named after the Saint Joseph’s University Hawks, where we met. We love to travel and have been to Europe and Australia since our wedding.
I learn something new with each marathon and I share my advice and tips on my blog. I do mix it up now and then with some non-running related stuff! Please stop by and I hope you enjoy reading!
I would LOVE to go to Australia! Do they have a marathon there?? Everyone go check out Kristy’s blog right now and say hello. Thanks Kristy for the email!

I use a Queen Helene Mud Mask. It’s made from English Clay. It’s brown, and hardens to tighten up the skin. My skin feels like whipped butter and is so pretty after this mask. It’s cheap, too (4.99 or so at Sally’s Beauty Supply). Queen Helene also makes a Mint Julep Masque, but that one was a little itchy for me for some reason. Their almond and oatmeal facial scrubs are good, too.
Kiehls makes a great mask called Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Masque; its pretty awesome. I look better with it on than when I rinse it off.
Australia is unreal. I spent 6 months there in college; best 6 months of my life.
It’s not blue? You got robbed.
i use an Olay mask that heats up when you put it on. Can’t remember the name of it, but I think it works well.
Clinique makes a mask in a blue tube (Turnaround http://www.clinique.com/product/CATEGORY21363/PROD14315/Skin_Care/ExfoliatorsMasks/index.tmpl). It’s on the expensive end, but it lasts a while…and if you put it on when you get home from a run and your pores are all open it’s like magic!
I actually love the Montagne Jeunesse masks…
If you ever make it to Australia I’d highly recommend the Great Ocean Road Marathon! I haven’t done it but it is on my doorstep and I can guarantee the most spectacular views of any marathon in the world!
I have never found a face mask that I actually like — when I was in high school I would do the egg/oatmeal face mask. No clue if it did anything for my skin, but it was something my friends and I did.
Hey!
I get all of my masks at LUSH. There is one everywhere it seems!
http://Www.lush.com
All of their face masks are fresh. So fresh and free of preservatives that you have to put them in the fridge. The only problem is that you have to go to a store to get it, they won’t ship the masks.
My favorite for my combination skin is “love lettuce”
I LOVE Lush!! You can only get the masks in the actual stores because they are made fresh every few days and have to be refrigerated. I love their bath bombs
I used to work there and trust me I really REALLY miss that discount! lol
A good one that I use for exfoliation is by ALBA (all natural) papaya enzyme. It really makes your face glow and feel very clean.
BTW you are very pretty (au naturale)!!
I feel the same way about masques yet I am compelled to do a couple weekly. I’ve tried so many but my favorites that I strongly recommend:
Mint Julep
http://www.drugstore.com/queen-helene-mint-julep-masque-mint-julep/qxp79218?fromsrch=queen+helene+masque
Grape Seed Extract
http://www.drugstore.com/queen-helene-grape-seed-extract-peel-off-masque/qxp79219?fromsrch=queen+helene+masque
Superfruits

The Queen Helene Mint Julep mask is the best out there. It was recommended to me by my facialist at an expensive spa, and she said she even uses it. It’s super cheap and your skin will glow the next day. People always comment on my skin after i’ve used it.
hahahahaaha that stinks. they NEVER peel off right.
I use the Merle Norman Luxiva Clarifying Clay Mask. I have ultra-sensitive skin & it works great — no irritation & doesn’t dry me out. I use it 2-3 times a week.
And, yes, I realize using Merle Norman makes me an old woman. I embrace it
I went to cosmetology school and we used Dermalogica products. I LOVE them! Very easy on your skin, great ingredients and they do what they say they will. Their was one face treatment with oatmeal in it that was heavenly. I’d recommend that for sure.
Totally know what you mean. I always feel like making such a healthy choice on the rare occasion I drink tea over coffee.
I mean I know tea is good for you, but it is really that much healthier than coffee?
Omg, yes it is SO much better for you than coffee especially if you drink white or green tea. Not that coffee is bad for you and I personally drink coffee every morning but feel like slapping myself because I don’t drink much tea even though I KNOW how amazing it is for you. Green tea in particular raises your metabolism, helps fights cancer, protects against diabetes and strokes.. and so on. It’s like a miracle drug!
that mask looks terrifying. Why isn’t it blue???
This one my origins is GREAT:

The first comment on here… I agree. I coudln’t remember the name I just know it’s under my bathroom sink & it’s green & cheap & works great. Glad she remembered Queen Helena mint julep. I sleep with it on once a week…I’ve tried a lot of different ones a gf told me bout this cheap lil beauty secret! It doesn’t itch my face tho, hmm maybe I’m doing something wrong lol
Masks freak me out!!!! If you find a good one, fill us in!!
I love Origins Charcoal Mask… I can FEEL it working! And it’s black, which is pretty cool. I even got the husband to try it out.
Love this one too! Used it for years!
I use Lush, it’s the best. I use one of their Fresh ones that you keep in the fridge. Love Lettuce is GREAT. Another Lush product thats great is Ultra Bland, it KILLS make-up and grime.
Earth’s Living Clay’s green clay powder is THE BEST! It sucks the life out of your pores. In a good way.
The face mask thing is hilarious. Please share what everyone’s favs are.
Boscia makes a luminous black face mask that I LOVE. Apply it thick, otherwise it’ll be a pain to peel off.
xoxo!
So, never commented before, but I’ve been reading your blog for a few weeks now and really love it. Actually, honey by itself, is an excellent face mask and cleanser! It has natural anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, healing, soothing and hydrating properties. It sounds messy, but it really isn’t bad at all. Just smooth some on your (clean) face, massage it in a bit, lay down to rest/meditate/read a good trashy gossip mag for 10-15 minutes, and then rinse off with warm water. It rinses off very easily. (I’m a licensed esthetician, so let me know if you have any other skin care questions.)
thanks for the tip, summer, and thanks for commenting!
I have never ran the Great Ocean Road Marathon but I have driven it and it probably is one of the pretties sights you will see…you should def try to run there!
I actually think your skin looks better without all the bronzer/tanner/whatever. Nothing wrong with a natural look…
I don’t do facial masks so I can’t help ya there!
I use a proactive mask and it’s great! I agree with the others you skin looks fantastic sans make-up–maybe I should consider honey as my primer!
Love Kristy too!
Found this article on the yahoo page.
Thought you might find it interesting.

I love Epicuren’s Chai Soy Mud Mask. I’ve used a ton of mud masks over the years and this one is my favorite. It is green and feeling really nice going on! And your skin is super soft after you wash it off. You need to help the removal process with a facial sponge if you have one. I wish I had a bathtub full of this stuff at my place so that I can just dunk my face in it every night.
I love Organic Apoteke brand, and use their detox face mask. I try to use it every week and especially on weeks when I’ve abused my skin.
Here’s helpful review of the product if you are interested in reaading more:

Love talking skincare! But I can’t talk masks without mentioning exfoliation- it’s key to great skin, scrub the nasty stuff off 1-2x/week. My esthetician introduced me to Borghese mud and it’s great! And you can get it at Costco for $28 (vs. $60+ retail) and you can use it all over your body if you’re into green mud. I blogged about it a few weeks ago, it’s great!
The best (and cheapest) one is Queen Helene Mint Julep.
i know ur overwhelmed with options but google mississippi miracle clay. That stuff is insane. Its the BEST face mask aaannnddd you can put it on your thutt when it hurts. Crazy stuff.
I use the clinique emergency mask. it works so good, and is super quick to use and makes my skin feel amazing
I have never run a marathon in Australia (although I am Australian) but I know the gold coast marathon and the great ocean road marathon are supposed to be good. We have heaps of marathons in each city but they are nowhere near as big as those in America!
SR- hey I had some running strategy questions. I’m more of a jogger and I have some special needs (no, I do not only have one leg or something). Is there a way to email you my questions? Or submit my question in some kind of way?
Thanks,
Elizabeth
yeah i cant really help you out with the only one leg, haha. email me at skinnyrunnerblog@gmail.com. no nude pictures though. man, im full of not funny jokes tonight.
I happened to be visiting Australia in september and the Sydney marathon, half and 10k were all happening! We did the 10k, it was perfect weather, beautiful sights and you go past Sydney harbor, the opera house, etc.. PEREFECT marathon! The gold coast is also gorgeous! As for face masks, brown sugar, oatmeal and honey is all natural and very exfoliating.
Can I PLEASE point out that approximately 87% of your Cat Ladies have a “frozen-mid-air-jump-I’m-so-carefree!!!!” picture? I’m just sayin….you have some seriously carefree readers.
If you are pale, than I am invisible. You’re the tannest white girl I’ve ever known, bronzer my butt
you look great without all the makeup!
I love face masks and I use them frequently, my faves are:
1. Queen helene mint julep, very thick, but works great! just discovered this a couple months ago actually, but I hear everyone loves it.
2. Dermalogica- love their products, expensive, but worth it! My skin tends to be oily and breakout prone, so my favorite mask is this one-
http://dermalogica.com/us/html/products/sebum-clearing-masque-53.html?type=function&cat=masques
3. Freeman avocado and oatmeal masque, cheap, can be found at walmart, etc. works very well
http://www.drugstore.com/freeman-facial-clay-mask-avocado-and-oatmeal-purifying/qxp20971
hope you find something you like
You should get your money back for that!
Hey SR!
For my second job, I am a Swiss skin care consultant. It’s all organic, pure, safe, beneficial products. As someone who has struggled with dry skin and breakouts, this is hands down the only mask that’s worked for me!
https://www.arbonne.com/shop_online/showcatalog.asp?Next=1
The Great Ocean Road marathon would be awesome! Aside from that there are plenty of marathons here to run, you just have to time it well
Pangea Organics makes a great mask! They’re also my favorite thing in the world.
It’s pricey and you may think I’m a lunatic for recommending a $40 mask, but their ingredients are SO GOOD! No chemicals (which is reassuring when you’re leaving something slathered on your face for 15 minutes!)

Australia… come visit us! Of course there are marathons here, come to the West – be different! We have the City to Surf Marathon end of August and the Perth Marathon in June or you can do a marathon on an island in Rottnest in November.
And you have two tour guides in my husband and I! It really is amazing here and your tan levels would definitely be topped up.
