Food + Water

by SkinnyRunner on March 22, 2011

(I wrote this post up last week in Phoenix and forgot to post it.  Yeah, I’m awesome like that)

Have I mentioned that my mom is an awesome cook who feeds us up like a champ?!

DSCN1908

We had tacos for dinner last night with organic beef from Costco.

She even made us a fresh berry pie with blueberries and raspberries that she handpicked!

DSCN1910

DSCN1907

DSCN1909

But I don’t think Button wasn’t really feeling tacos…. maybe he wanted the momma milkshake instead.

DSCN1913

DSCN1914

I am pretty much a horrible photographer as evidenced once again, here.

My dad wanted to take a posed guacamole picture…

DSCN1915

Yeah, baby.

Afterwards we made ‘smores out by the fire and I could not get a great picture for the life of me.  I think I might as well hire K to be my photog.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have a top secret health tip that I’m going to share that you’ve never heard from anyone before, especially celebrities: drink A LOT of water.  Yeah, groundbreaking, I know.  I’m going to write The Secret 2.
If you are ever around me, you know I always have a water bottle on me.  In fact, I collect them like I collect Spanx.  My three favorites:
DSCN1824
First came the SIGG.
It’s aluminum which makes it super portable, very lightweight and easy to throw in a bag and travel with it.
The only problem is that unscrewing and screwing on the top gets old if you’re drinking it frequently.  And it’s hard to clean with the small mouth (it’s not dishwasher safe).
DSCN1822
Next is the Starbucks cup.
Jaymo bought this for me in Hawaii, and I love using this at home because drinking from a straw makes it easier to drink more.  It’s easy to clean with the wide mouth, and I can throw it in the dishwasher, a big plus.
I fill this cup up at home 5-6 times a day.  The one problem is that it isn’t as portable; you can’t just take it everywhere without spilling it.
DSCN1823
And then came a new water bottle which is like a sweet hybrid of the two: the G2V zero mass wide mouth water bottle.
DSCN1825
Recently The Squires Group sent me a G2V zero mass wide mouth water bottle to try out.
z9501-si_2
G2V bottles, lids and accessories are environmentally friendly and BPA free.
The Zero Mass line of bottles are vacuum insulated, designed to keep your beverage cold all day.
The single wall, Wide Mouth Bottles are offered in three sizes. BPA free, reusable & recyclable.
Here’s what I dig about this bottle:
  • It’s double insulated so your drink stays cold but the outside of the bottle isn’t.  (I had ice cubes in it the other night – were still not melted in the morning!)
  • It’s portable; the straw easily flips in and seals up tight so you can throw it in your bag and go.  I brought it to Phoenix with me in my purse.
  • It has a straw to sip from and inside the bottle so you don’t have to tip the bottle up.
  • The wide mouth is easy to clean, love that.
So it’s kinda like the best of both the SIGG bottle and my Starbucks cup – straight up radness.
The double walled wide mouth bottles (like I have) hold 520mL and cost $32.99.   If you’re looking for a cheaper option, there’s also a single walled bottle that starts at $15.99 and comes in 3 different sizes.
singlewall-wide
Oh, I forgot to mention, the bottles are made of 304-grade stainless steel.  The dirty fingerprints are an added extra. :)
DSCN1821
Here’s what I know:
1. Water is vital to all your body processes, from running well to good skin.  Your body needs water. period.
2.  Reusable plastic water bottles aren’t the best earth-friendly choice and the BPA in them isn’t good for our bodies.
3. Get your water in however works for you… carrying a gallon jog around, using a chart system to count the glasses, refilling the same glass, etc.
dscn1933_thumb
(It was brought to my attention that the G2V made an appearance in my modeling show, rude.)
Here’s what I think about the G2V bottles:
1. $32 is expensive for a water bottle.  Let’s shoot straight: it is.
2. But if you’re like me and always have one with you, I think it’s worth it.  Invest in the things you always use.
For example, I have a really nice watch that I wear it every.single.day, but I don’t have a really nice pair of hoops because I rarely change my earrings.
3. So you could buy a 3 pack of water bottles from Target or get one very high quality bottle for around the same price.
4. The Squires Group has offered to give one away to one lucky reader!  The same wide mouth, double insulated bottle that I have.
All you have to do to enter is tell me,
 How do you get your water in?
-Extra entries for talking about the contest.
-Winner will be picked at random on Wednesday.
I carry a nalgene around. It was free and BPA-free, but it’s not the most convenient, as I sometimes spill all down my front. And by sometimes, I mean often.
I get my water from a $2.99 water bottle from Target. I lost my old awesome water bottle, so I’m using this one until I find an acceptable replacement. This would be perfect!!!!
I get my water in daily by carrying my Camelbak water bottle (in purple!) everywhere I go, every single day of the week. I swear by water!
I use a SIGG and I 100% agree about the darn screw cap!
I have a cup similar to your Starbucks one and I like it, but like you said, I can’t throw it in my purse and go! I refill my cup over and over while I am at work. It gives me s reason to get up and walk around every hour or so!
I drink most of my water out of Costco water bottles, but I can fill up my recycling bin in less than a week. Not cool.
I just got one of the cups like yours (#2) at the expo for the marathon I ran on Sunday. It definitely helps me keep up on hydration! And the race was my new PR (3:26) so I love that this cup will be my reminder of this awesome race. At work, I still use a plastic Nalgene… but I try to drink it up fast enough that I avoid BPA’s (probably not rational, but it makes me feel better). This new fella would be great!
Most of the time I carry a Tervis Tumbler with a lid on it…pretty convenient! If I’m traveling, I’ll use a stainless steel bottle to carry water. I always have a bottle of water, no matter where I am!
I drink lots and lots of water everyday. At the gym and on the way to work, I drink about 3 Nathan’s handhelds bottles of water. Then at work I have a huge water glass and I drink at least 3 of them a day. I also drink a glass at home for lunch and then a couple at home in the evenings. I love water, obviously. :)
Ooo I really want this. I have a Kleen Kanteen sports top bottle that makes a really loud slurping sound whenever I drink from it. Finding the right water bottle is a real problem for me. I have that one from Starbucks too, and love how it always tricks me into thinking I am drinking a fancy iced coffee drink. But alas, the portability makes it a no go.
Reply
I carry a 32oz bpa free bottle around everywhere I go. It may be sad, but green tea and water and the ocas. coffee are the only non-alcoholic beverages I drink.
SIGG and a tumbler cup! I drink everything from a straw – it helps you drink more! =)
Reply
Ha I am an avid cup collector as well! I always just carry around cups like your Starbucks one. The straw makes it easier to drink more for me.
Reply
I have the Starbucks cup like you. It is handy around the house, but not portable like you said. I’m a stay-at home mom, so I drink most of my water while at home. I make myself alternate between coffee and water. I start with my cup of coffee in the morning and then pound 2 cups of water before I can have my 2nd cup of coffee. I drink another 2 before I have another beverage, etc. So basically I alternate between coffee, tea or diet soda with 2 cups of water all day.
I would LOVEEEE to get my hands on this fab water bottle! I get my water in at work by refilling nasty plastic water bottles with our filtered water cooler(thankfully!)
At home, I can use our filtered water and just use a cup and ice. Its so much easier for me to drink colder water, so this would ROCK!
On the weekends I use my Sigg
We get cases of water delivered to our office. Not earth friendly at all but free! My goal everyday is to drink 5 – 6 bottles of water while at work and more when I get home :-)
The one you posted sounds awesome and is way better for the environment then my 5 bottles of plastic each day.
Reply
JRo March 22, 2011 at 8:34 am
why don’t you contact nalgene or sigg or camelbak and see if you can arrange a deal for your office to be supplied with reusable water bottles, and suggest to your boss that the company install a water cooler or filtration system?? my previous company got a bunch of camelbak bottles with the company logo on it for pretty cheap. be the office visionary!
I get my water from a similar “style” water bottle, but it’s plastic and it was $5 at Marshal’s, so it’s probably leaking BPA into my co-workers that just merely sit near me. It also routinely leaks inside my purse – which was priceless the day a bottle of motrin also popped open in my purse (child proof, what?) and the result was a big orange pasty mess. HOT. So PLEASE choose me! I need a better way to get me 6-8 liters a day!
I’m much better about getting my water in during the week because I have this mondo-huge bottle that I fill before work every morning and make sure I drink before I leave my desk in the afternoons.
The weekends – not so much. Because this bottle is ginormous, I don’t like to carry it around when I do things. I rely on chugging glasses of water when I’m at home (and remember) to make up for it. It usually doesn’t work out well…
Does that water bottle sweat? That factor always makes me nervous when I throw one into my bag. Right now I use a Thermos Intak bottle, it has a counter on it so you can keep track of how many times you fill it up throughout the day.
I have a pink Camelbak water bottle that I take with me everywhere! I used to be a bottled water person, but invested in having a drinking system installed at our house about 2 years ago…pretty sure it has paid for itself now. I love the Camelbak but it doesn’t stay cold till I get to the bottom unless I am super thirsty!
I’m pretty bad about carrying water with me, but at work, I use it as an excuse to get up from my desk and walk to the kitchen. At least it gives me a little break :)
I have a few lovely no-name stainless steel water bottles that I carry around. I typically leave one at my desk and one in the car this way I never seem to be without water. I also love LaCroix sparkling water and have at least one a day. They are a good filler for bored, mindless eating.
I may have a slight water bottle addiction… I refill my camelbak bottle at least 3x a day and take it with me pretty much everywhere I go.
I have a travel mug in my car that my sister bought me (she really thought she was buying me a SIGG but I had to break it to her that it wasn’t) one at work (it says “I’m saving the planet, what are you doing?” on it I love it) and a brita at home. I constantly have water in my hand and rarely drink anything other than water and coffee. I don’t have one with a straw so this one be perfect!
My office buys cases of poland springs water, so i tend to drink a lot of those. I also bring the bottles home and refill them with tap water a few times. Obviously this is a very sophisticated technique if you can ignore the whole BPA, non eco-friendly part.
Bobble!
It filters while you drink, so if you fill it up at random water fountains it takes out icky stuff that makes the water taste funky.
I keep water at my desk at all times. When I finish the bottle (crappy plastic bottle as it is now) I love having the excuse of refilling it to get up an move around. I also make it a point to take sip of water at every water fountain I pass. It’s almost a ritual to me now.
My favorite water bottle is one I got in a spa-goodie bag. It reminds me of sitting out by the pool and all the good times I had on that trip! Too bad I put a smoothie in it (and then left it in my car for three… weeks) and now it smells like something died in it.
I get the most water in by refilling the same glass all day while i’m at home. I have a nalgene, but it is not as portable as i had hoped–doesn’t fit in car cup holders, kind of a hassle to unscrew every time i want to drink (a lot). So this transportation friendly solution sounds awesome for me!
I use some big blue thing I got at Wal-Mart but since it isn’t dishwasher safe it’s sitting in the sink most of the time. Here lately I’ve had Target brand bottled water at work and I refill one bottle the whole day. Not the green-est but green-er.
I have been in the market for a new water bottle for a while. Most days, I get my water from a glass (that I refill all day). I’ve been working from home recently, which has made that possible. But I only have an old Nalgene that goes on the road with me (and leaks!!)
When I run, I get my water from my fuel belt!
I do the whole “refill the cup mucho times each day” and switch out cups either at night or in the morning. This doesn’t quite translate to being on-the-go, so a portable water bottle would be great!
I love that water bottle! I must have it. It’s really cool they’re letting you give one away.
How I get my water. I have tried many water bottles. I have one with a screw on cap and wide mouth, which was easy to clean but sucks when on the treadmill or walking/jogging outside, as I have to unscrew it repeatedly (apparently, the twisting motion affects my legs, because they either slow to a crawl or stop completely). I have another, slimmer one with a screw on cap. it’s harder to clean, doesn’t hold as much, and STILL has to be unscrewed. At present, I use bottled water (I know, I know), because I like the size (easier to add in a little Crystal Light), or the Culligan water cooler when I’m at work. I sometimes buy jugs and refill them at the store, but they are a pain to keep germ free, and I’d black my own eye (or someone else’s) trying to heave it around with me on my jogging excursions.
It sounds like this water bottle would be perfect for me. I’m keeping my fingers crossed!
I usually drink 2-3 full large Nalgenes of water a day. This is great, but it’s still the BPA one I had in college. I tried to tell my husband the BPAs might kill me to try to get him to buy me a new one (since I’m cheap), but he said the vodka is probably doing that, not the BPAs.
I have the same white Sigg as you (well, not with your picture :-) ) & I do put mine in the dishwasher. I keep it on my desk at work & pound down the water all day long. It ensures I don’t sit at my chair & create further butt spread, and that I get my water in. Double win. It helps that my employer provides cold filtered water in every mini kitchen.
At home, we have a fridge with a water filtration system on the door. I fill up glasses of water all day long. I’m a water addict. Ask anyone in my family. If a waiter is slow on the refills & we’re out for a meal, I’ll start with my glass, but I’ll work my way around the table drinking other glasses until we get more. I have no shame when it comes to getting my fix.
How I get my water in? Well, I drink about 3-4 liters (I’m Dutch, we do it metric ;) ) of water a day on average. A bit more in summer. Half of my water intake is herbal vennel tea (great detox tea). It works like a charm: if my water intake is low on a day, I’ll immediately notice, so I’m sticking with this plan.
Makes me pee a lot, though… There has got to be a sollution for that problemo…
I have a red, plastic bottle from Wal-Mart that I love! It’s the only thing I drink from. It’s 32 oz and I try to drink at least four a day. What I don’t love is that the ice melts within a couple hours, it sweats and gets everything wet, and I love to drop my water bottles because it gives them character. Until they split open and I have to buy another new one. Stainless steel would save me! After all I have spent replacing this one I may as well have gotten a nice one for thirty bucks!
I get my water in by having at H20 schedule that has become routine. I have a refillable similar to the SIGG that has a screw on and off top. I always have to finish and refill my bottle at these times:
-on the drive to work
-while waiting for school to start (teacher)
-during my prep period
-at lunch
-on the drive home from work
-with dinner
-before I go to bed.
I try to throw in a few extra bottles in between when I have the chance, usually at home. I like these little benchmarks because it keeps me on track.
I have a cheap aluminum bottle that spills when I don’t take fifteen minutes to close the screw top perfectly. I’m pretty sure that I’ve ingested a lot of water as it soaks through my bag, my pants and then the skin on my leg. I also have an old Nalgene, but only use it to take vodka drinks to the park (I love how that wide mouth fits lots of ice cubes). I’m pretty sure that the alcohol kills the BPA toxins. I have used the same water bottle for about a year now and my students always make fun of me because its like a permanent attachment on my body, so a new one would be great! I LOVE your blog-you are so real and down-to-earth-but with superhuman running powers….love it!
I drink my water from a 32oz PINK plastic bottle (apparently BPA FREE)… I drink 2 glasses of water before I leave the house, fill my water bottle up (4 cups), and make sure to have 2-3 cups of H2O at home (during dinner, before bed, etc…)
And of course, EXTRA if I’m working out!
I have been getting more water in lately with my 24 oz Tervis Tumbler. It keeps my drinks cold, but it does spill. I also have been drinking more sparkling water which makes me feel like I’m drinking something special, either that or I use lemon (or Crystal Light). I need a good portable bottle that doesn’t spill and keeps my water cold!
I carry my Liberty Bottle with me everywhere.
I used to be a Sigg fanatic until I stumbled upon Liberty Bottles at REI. They are amazing for the following reasons:
~Cheaper than Sigg! $18 at REI. For Realz.
~ Made in the USA!!!
~Wide mouth and THREADLESS! Only a quarter turn to open & close. No more turning & turning like you do with a Sigg.
~Made of recycled materials
~The artwork is all from local artists!
I probably sound like I work for them. I swear I don’t, I just have tried SO many reusable water bottles and am so happy to have found these guys.
My water… I have 2 Siggs, 1 CamelBak, and a fourth aluminum bottle I got for running a race for charity. My husband has 2 Siggs, and my kids each have 2 KleanKanteens. So in my house, that’s 10 water bottles, all needing to be hand washed, but so important to our daily life. And since I’m terrible at washing the bottles, I could definitely use another – especially one that stays cold in the Texas summer heat!
Side note: I was at Costco needing coffee, and pulled up your coffee post on my phone to buy the stuff you recommended. Just to discover my Costco no longer carries San Fransisco Bay coffee! So I settled for another brand, and now have 3 lbs of coffee I DO NOT LIKE! But I’m cheap and will drink it all before buying another $14 of coffee. So, my question is: If SFB coffee were no longer available at your Costco, what brand would you buy (preferable at Costco – I don’t want to spend $10/lb on coffee).
Reply
SkinnyRunner March 22, 2011 at 12:52 pm
While I’m at home I use my Starbucks cup (just lime yours), because I love how easy it is to swig tons of water due to the straw. So far today I have filled it up 4 times, and it’s only lunchtime! I’m a water addict!
When I leave the house I always have my pink, double latching (no spilling with this bottle!), Nalgene bottle with me. Even if the hubs and I are heading out to dinner or a friend’s house I take it with me. He jokes that they will provide water at the above mentioned locations…but what if I get thirsty in the car?!? And we live in LA, so there is always that strong possibility of getting stuck in traffic for 2 days.
I have a friend who has a stainless steel bottle similar to the first one you posted so it is stainless steel with a small mouth. She recently realized that it was growing MOLD! Probably because its so enclosed and difficult to wash! I love your parents’ chairs! I have a zebra and hot pink guest room.
I love my Starbucks cup too. I have only gotten iced coffee in it once and have used it for water ever since.
I’m still working on drinking enough water every day. At home, I have a glass I refill. When I teach/work, I just carry a plastic water bottle that I buy from the store (the disposable/recyclable kind). See why I need to win!?! :-)
I have a huge mug, my “bubba” keg. It hold 52 oz of water and keeps it cold for 12 hours. I usual drink two throughout the day even though all my coworkers like to make fun of it’s size.
I use a Contigo water bottle. I love it but it’s getting “yucky” in places and so I’ll have to replace it pretty soon. Hopefully with a G2V !!!
I have a few nalgenes that I use daily. I also got a VS water bottle that I thought I’d like but the lid makes too much noise…
I use an aluminum water bottle at work which I make myself refill every time I go to the bathroom. If I’m drinking a lot of water, then I’m going to the bathroom A LOT!
Recently, I’ve been suuuuper lazy and have been buying water bottles. :( Otherwise, I have a few stainless steel bottles which I’m not in love with, so I’d love to try this one!! :)
sodastream!! it carbonates and deliciou-fies my water. It’s the best thing ever.
I chug water at the gym and while running, but other than that it’s diet soda, tea, or crystal light for me. I’m so NATURAL isn’t it great? harhar.
I love reusable water bottles but they always spill (a few times in my work bag). I fill up either my Nalgene or Kleen Kanteen and I’ll drink one can of LaCroix.
Liz March 22, 2011 at 9:00 pm
I drink most of my water sitting at my desk at work because they bought us these reusable cups like your one from Hawaii. Straws make water sooo much better.
Reply
Lisa March 22, 2011 at 9:01 pm
I have a couple of BPA-free plastic ones with with either a squirt top of a straw that I use. I drink water constantly throughout the day!
Reply
Vickie March 22, 2011 at 9:10 pm
I use different reusable water bottles, depending on the activity – camelbak, nathan, amphipod. Sometimes I need something other than water so the nuun tablets or lipton iced tea packets are great!
I love my starbucks cup but I am tired of spilling water in my purse. I may just have to buy one of those water bottles just so I can be as chool a you.
A plain old glass as often as I can. I’ve stopped using my Nalgene bottles because of concerns about BPA, but haven’t wanted to sink the money into a SIGG.
Reply
Kristin March 23, 2011 at 5:00 am
I try to make sure I drink a big glass any time I am near the sink, and before each cup of coffee. I have that same starbucks cup (well not HI, but same basic thing) and my fave is my pink camelback- it’s like the G2V but not insulated so my water gets warm fast… I also have a sigg and that’s what my kids use :) I am always on the lookout for th perfect water bottle- looks like you found it!
I have a 32oz plastic bottle that I fill out of the tap and then shove a whole lemon in it. Every time I drink the whole thing I can have a cup of coffee….keeps me from drinking 2 pots a day.
I leave water bottles through out my house and in my truck so I am never far from one. I use the one’s that I’ve gotten for free from races. Something good has to be done with them besides landfill!
I get my H20 in by mixing it with Click protein powder mix. Blah blah yeah yeah of course i found out about Click through SR. But i love it!
I drink water all day long, especially when I am sitting at my desk at work. I drink from a Kleen Kanteen.
I maintain a glass on my writing desk at work that I fill up throughout the day. We keep Costco water in the fridge at home and I frequently will refill those a combine of times out of the knock before I salvage them…but I would in all probability do healthier to have an concrete water bud vase that I could sponge down from time to time.
Reply
Kat March 23, 2011 at 8:38 am
I have a klean kanteen which i really like (except for the screw top!) but it doesn’t keep things very cold. I’m usually gone for 12-14 hours, so I need my water to stay cold as long as possible!
Enter me! I have a non-insulated subzero aluminum water bottle, which I got from Walgreens for $3. I am cheap-o! I take this to work and fill it up 2 to 5 times a day. I would love an insulated watter bottle.
Reply
Sara March 23, 2011 at 8:46 am
I use my Starbucks cup and I fill that sucker up 5 times a day at work. I do not have a water bottle to take to the gym.
I use a Sigg, but I probably leave water in there too long and now the cap is kind of gunky. Gross.
It is so hard for me to get my water in! I work in surgery. Not just in the department but right up there with the blood and guts. Its not like I can just drop an instrument and go potty! I drink one glass when I wake up and try my best through out the day depending on my schedule to drink as much as I can. On the weekends, I probally overload trying to catch up!
Allison March 23, 2011 at 9:19 am
I use a camelback bottle, but it doesn’t keep my water cold. Not a problem in the winter, but rather annoying now that it’s warming up.
I struggle!! I don’t REALLY like water. It’s just not my thing. I’d rather have a cup of coffee. A few years ago, I drank about a bucket of Diet Pepsi everyday. I have a 1 liter smart water bottle that makes me feel really cool to drink from so I make it my goal to refill that two times everyday and guzzle my heart out.
Random note: I always refill it before leaving work. It keeps me from having to buy a Brita or other filtered water. hahaha. I’m cheap to the extreme.
I get my water in by filling two bottles in the morning before leaving – I have one with me at all times then rotate between the two. I am so busy with my kids if I dont have two filled I usually wont get alot in!
Reply
Jenn March 23, 2011 at 9:27 am
I don’t get enough water in!! I have never really liked the taste of it until I recently went for a massage at a local spa. Cucumbers in the water………delish!!! It makes it so refreshing. I started doing it at home in my Brita. Now if only I had something to carry my water around in! Hmmmmmmmmm.
Reply
Maddie March 23, 2011 at 9:30 am
I carry an old Sigg bottle around everywhere I go. That way I always have water readily available and I feel like I’m being environmentally friendly. It’s a win-win.
amanda March 23, 2011 at 9:31 am
I use a 32 ounce rubbermaid plastic water bottle. I fill it up3-4 times a day from the five gallon water boy dispenser housed in the garage. I like room temperature water. I do not like it cold, therefore, sometimes it is too cold when I first fill it up so I have to set it on the granite countertop underneath the wine fridge where it is nice and toasty. The cat usually vies for the same spot in the house so there has been some territory issues but I digress…
These bottles are so cool! To get my water in, I use a hot pink and lime green tervis tumbler with a pink lid. Great for the office but terrible for carrying around! Would LOVE THIS BOTTLE!
I have a slew of water bottles, but I wouldn’t mind one more! I have a .6 liter Sigg, but it tastes kind of metallic-y so I don’t use it. I have a 1-liter Nalgene with a smiley face sip guard – that thing is AWESOME because Nalgene has a really wide mouth. Sip guard leaves just a little opening for sipping (duh!). I also have a super high-tech NATHAN bottle that has a straw. My mom bought for my husband (Nathan!) but I quickly stole it since he does not drink water. Lately, I’ve been keeping a Kombucha glass bottle at work. It’s not a water bottle per se, but I feel green re-using it. So I think that covers it. My longest comment ever!
I have two water bottles–an older one with a straw that I use around the house (because it leaks if you tip it), and a spill-free one that I use when I’m on the go–work, traveling in the car, running errands, etc. With two water bottles, one is always in the fridge, cold and ready to go.
