This morning was an early wake up call. I spent the night at my friends Reese and Jim’s house in Calabasas (thank you guys!) and went to bed at 11pm and got up at 3:15am. If I was any better at math, I’d figure out how little sleep that was.
(Reese is such a great host she not only had coffee ready at 3:15am, she had all this out for me)
I drove to Santa Monica where I parked and then caught the 4:45am shuttle to the Dodgers Stadium about 25 miles away.
I hung out for a couple boring hours at the start, met up with Pam and then got in the B corral.
An IMPORTANT note: it wasn’t raining before the race so I made a critical mistake: in my car at the last moment I changed out of my capris and put on a skirt. Then mistake #2: I gave Pam my rain slicker to bag check. This would come back to bite me in my wet, soggy butt. big time.
We started 15 minutes late but finally got started at 7:45am. I didn’t have a time goal for this race because I went into it feeling a little achy, sore and tired, especially my shin. But my one goal that’s always the same: to pace myself smartly enough to finish strong especially the last 10k.
(I dig the sign. And this guy’s plastic head. I hope he’s not trying to suffocate himself. It’s just bad weather, buddy; don’t give up on yourself)
Pam and I ran the first mile together in 8:21 and then she took off like the wind and left me in the rain.
By mile 2 it was raining. And it never stopped. It down poured at times. It thundered twice. It flooded certain parts of the road. It was like Portland all over again but maybe even wetter? This skirt is unlucky with the rain gods.
(It was so windy that after the first couple miles the orange blow up mile markers were taken down because they couldn’t stay upright)
I met readers Lara and Jennifer during the race and got to talk to both for a bit. Hope you both had great (albeit wet) races!
I took my camera with me because the Stadium to the Sea course has a lot of famous landmarks and sites, but by mile 5 I put it away in my belt because it was getting so wet. The few shots I took:
Chinatown
An afro’ed naked American Flag
I think this is the Disney Concert Hall.
Thought this guy’s shirt was funny. As were his super short shorts. Who wears short shorts? He wears short shorts! And that’s all the pictures I took.
Here were my splits:
10K – 49:45 8:08 pace
15K – 1:14:13 7:58
20K – 1:38:05 7:53
25K – 2:02:11 7:51
30K – 2:26:10 7:50
35K – 2:50:00 7:49
40K – 3:12:39 7:45
Finish – 3:21:36
Overall Pace: 7:41
Place
Overall: 536
Gender: 60

I’m super happy with my pacing; I didn’t really know how I’d feel so I started conservatively enough that I was able to really pick it up the last 5 miles. Mile 25 was a 6:58. Who am I?! That’s gross to run that fast.
For those 5 miles I kept repeating two things: Lay the hammer down and Make it hurt. I don’t know why those two particular phrases, but I guess it worked.
(Post-race back in the car. Looks like my camera might need a towel)
The weather, by the way, made the race pretty miserable as expected. As soon as it started raining, I knew my ipod wouldn’t work (it’s like Simon Cowell, super touchy) so this was my second marathon running WITHOUT music the whole dang time. And I didn’t even mean to.
I was drenched within the first couple miles and by the end of the race, I was pretty cold, especially my hands. I was so glad to be done… until I realized I had to walk at least a mile in the rain and wind to my car. Talk about chilly with up to 30 mph gusts.
Eats:
I had a Clif bar 45 minutes before the race started and then a GU energy gel at:
Mile 8.75
Mile 13.75
Mile 20 (wanted to take this around 18.5 but forgot)
Mile 23
The first half of the race I drank water from the aid stations and the second half I switched to Gatorade.
Overall, for the weather and no music, I’m really happy with my race even though it was pretty miserable running.
Congrats to Pam who ran a PR!
And to Sarah who ran a 15 minute PR!!
(Stole the pic from her blog)
ChicRunner also ran the race so congrats to her as well!
And thanks, of course, to Salonpas who gave me the entry for the race. I’m wearing 3 Salonpas patches right now, one on each knee and one on my thutt. Jaymo’s napping beside me and I want to slap one on his face for fun…
For those of you who mentioned my headband, it’s a BIC Band – half the price of other bands and $1 from every band goes to charity. Thanks Sandy for sending me some!
*While I was typing this up, the power went out again. Eek!

Congrats to you! Sorry to hear it was such a soggy run. I admire you for sticking that one out. I want to have guts to do the same one day! OH and I LOVE me some BICbands!!
Congrats on an awesome race!!! Why do I find joy in the fact that the LA marathon was as bad if not worse than Portland? I grew up in LA and now live in Vancouver, WA. Ran Portland 2010 in it’s sogginess. Los Angelenos are such wimps about the rain…would love to have witnessed the emotional outbursts about the rain of such a crew!
The man with the plastic head is a perfect example! Lol.
Congrats, SR! I’m in Moorpark right now and we’re getting drenched. Miserable running conditions, but great job!
Skinny Runner- thanks again for the Salonpas entry. I did it proud! This was my second marathon (last one was 11 years ago and took me 4:50). I managed a 4:01, but if it weren’t for a dignity-preserving potty stop at mile 22…it was a 3:58! Great times and THANK YOU!!! Busted a PR by 50 minutes!!!
congrats katie!!!!! that is amazing!
You totally beat that weather! Great race!
Holy Smokes you are super fast! What miserable conditions. I really admire you because I do not like to be cold and I do not like to be wet…I grew up in Nevada!
Can you let us know how you liked the new race belt. And what kind it is. I have the spibelt but I want a belt that I can attach my GU’s to.
YOU ARE SO AMAZING!!! I am the biggest baby when it comes to running in the rain. Next time it’s raining out I’m going to SUCK IT UP and tell myself that at least I’m not running a whole marathon in rain.
Nice work! That’s too bad it rained on you the entire race. But you did awesome!
Wow! I can’t believe you had that much rain!! And your thick BIC Band looks great!
Can you put me on the list for the preorder of shirts next time around?
wow, you gals are super tough! Congrats!! Now you can rest up, no more rain hopefully.
I am amazed by your pacing!! I really need to work on going out slower and finishing strong, negative splits!
3:21 in the rain??? nice job!
I ran in the rain for my first marathon… GROSS… GREAT JOB SR!!!! How did your shins feel?
its a little sore still but ive been icing it. im sure its not anythign serious, just a crappy ache.
Great job through that weather!!
You did amazing for going into with a bum calf–You make it look easy!
I ran Portland in Oct. too, so I feel like I know your pain…or sogginess! Here’s to minimal chafing and another awesome mary!!
Dang you’re fast, even in crappy conditions! I was there too, and it was miserable. Like a big ugly wet t-shirt contest. I agree that the walk back to the parking lot was a cruel trick.
Simon Cowell ipod, haha. Great race today! You continually inspire and impress me!
omg did you notice the one guy in the american flag is barefoot?
I did and it almost looked like his feet were bleeding. what’s up with that?
Wow, you are a much stronger person than I am. I cannto stand to be cold or wet, much less run in it. I did a 10K in the rain once and destroyed my toe, so never again, I vowed right then. I can’t even dream about those times in a 5K, let alone 26.2 miles. You continue to amaze me, one post at a time. That you can run a marathon in such nasty weather and remember to take pictures and then write a nice post about it, wow. You are my heroine.
Wow, congrats!!! That is totally inspiring to newbie like myself
You rock SR!!
great job on another amazing race! you are seriously inspiring!
that pic of you after the race is hysterical. love it : )
Congrats that is seriously awesome! Running in the rain? You are a champion! I bought a running skirt to try out because you always run in them and they look so championesc.
You’re awesome!
Yay for your awesome race! Running in the rain blows, makes everything miserable.
congrats on the race! Way to go! Sorry to hear it was a wet one.
Congrats on an awesome race!
GREAT JOB SARAH!! YOU ARE AN AWESOME “RUNNER!!” GREAT PACING CHICA!!
The rain had zero compassion!! Did you see the young asian boy (btwn 8-10y/o)? Most kids that age don’t consider running marathons! AMAZING!! The volunteers were soo awesome to stick it out with us! My hands were freezing too! I tried to put out a peace sign to them but my hands were frozen!
Take care of your knee and your “thutt!!”
ANOTHER ONE DOWN!! REST UP AND DRINK CHAMPAGNE AND EAT LOTS OF CINNAMON GUMMY BEARS!!
HAVE A GREAT EVENING!
xo
Pam I’d love to know your PR time!!
3:26:30. shaved off 5 seconds!! Thanks for asking!!
You are totally inspiring. I am a chicken about running in the rain (& I’m in Seattle, so I better learn to suck it up). Cute pictures & so impressed with you rocking it out on mile 25. Holy cats that’s fast!
My mom said 5 1/2″ feel there today! Holy cow! Way to go though! You are such a rock star! I was almost a complete pansy today and just about chose the treadmill over the crazy windy day. Figured if you guys could run in a torrential downpour, I could handle a little wind. Thanks for the inspiration!
Been thinking about you all day! Love it that you blog so I can keep up on your life…. Congrats on yet another marathon! I still think your crazy, but I actually said to J today that I might start running (it was our first sunny day in I don’t know how long, so wierd that you had rain….) and then he smirked at me, and I said “maybe tomorrow”. So maybe tomorrow I will haul out the double jogger and strap the baby to my chest and at least take a walk…..
You are so speedy! Argh! I wish I could hammer out some sub-8 miles on long runs…and then a sub-7 in the last couple miles. GEEZ! You rock!
two questions: Does Reese have a blog and why didn’t she run this one, too, since she rocked in NYC?
she does not have a blog. i just don’t think she’s had the time to train because shes super busy with her business (certified financial planner) so she better be making me some money! shes running a trail half marathon with me this coming weekend though.
I didn’t know you were running LA. My recap is on my blog, but you did really well compared to me! I think in some ways, I feel lucky that I wasn’t seriously hurt or anything. I must be weak-o-sauce.
you ran a marathon in a FLOOD! Nothing weak about that.
Amazing job! Especially with the rain!!
I was sad I ended up opting out of the free entry. Feel like such a loser.
Congrats, great job on the awesome time in the rain! You are a better person than I, I would have said no thanks to a wet run!
Congrats on finishing another marathon. Even special because it’s local and you’re a local runner celebrity around here
I know the rain totally sucked and I was thinking of all you marathon runners this morning.
I don’t think I can even run a marathon with your finishing time, even with perfect conditions and if I was running in Hawaii with the birds singing in my ears.
Great job…even with the rain and all.
Congrats on #15!
I ran LA today too, first marathon. I was worried about the rain all week. I sure didn’t expect the downpour we got. I don’t think the rain slowed me down though, except for navigating big puddles. I felt worse about the rain after I was done and was freezing. Did you hear about all the runners being checked for hypothermia?
I also ran a really speedy mile 25 (for me). That decline on San Vicente and the feeling of getting it over with works wonder.
Too bad about the weather….congrats on the pacing though!
“who wears short shorts??” lol
That stinks that it was raining the whole time, miserable.
You are super speedy, your pace time is like my 5 miler pace time, not marathon (then again, I don’t know my marathon pace time yet).
Stupid question, but how do the splits work? Like if you’re always averaging 7:50ish, how is your overall pace 7:41? Is it a chip/gun thing?
the last 10k i really picked it up so instead of running 7:50s i was running low 7s which then lowers the average pace overall.
Congrats! I managed a 3:34:56, which I was happy with considering the conditions. I was on course for a 3:30 but by mile 20 I was borderline hypothermic and my shoes weighed like 10 pounds each so I slowed down a little. Good luck in Boston, and it was nice to meet you!
Congrats on another great race! I’m assuming the trail run you are doing is Chesebro. It’s going to be my first trail race. Any tips?
start out slow. it starts downhill and you can really scream down it, but you’re gonna be paying for it on the steep uphills. so start very conservatively. also, bring your own water and gels/food if its warm out. i remember thinking there wasn’t enough water last year.
Thanks SR!
i’ve been reading you for so long and i am never unamazed by your speed. seriously, you are so fast! even in crappy conditions. i don’t get it! you are truly awesome.
oh – and i saw a skinnyrunner shirt during a half i ran yesterday in St. Pete, Florida. it gave me a little pickup!
CONGRATS on your race! Major props for toughing it out in such bad weather.
You are a freaking rock star
Way to kick some arse!
Your hostess is awesome for having coffee ready for you. My hostess for my last race doesn’t drink coffee but thank gosh she had a coffee pot…you better believe I brought a little baggie of coffee with me to her house!
Wow, that is amazing! Congrats on an awesome race. 6:58 25th mile? Are you bionic?!
You had mentioned last year that you would not run the L.A. marathon again unless some one paid your entry fee, which we know the nice people at Salonpas did for you…..so, aside from the rain, was this year a better race experience, or do you still stand by your “never again” policy? I was thinking about running it next year, so I’d like to hear your opinion.
Great job on your time, and for surviving the monsoon!
it definitely was better this year, ill do a full review on it soon, but i dont think id pay $145 out of my own pocket to run it again.
You are hardcore. I kept thinking about the marathoners out in the rain! CRAZY! But it looks like you did AWESOME despite the rain.
Was that guy in the flag shirts bare foot?!?!?!
Thanks for sharing. I was really interested in reading recaps/experiences from those who ran this wet marathon. I enjoyed it from the comfort of my apartment on Hollywood Blvd at Mile 10 while my boyfriend blasted the Rocky theme out the window. I am in awe by the dedication, endurance and both the physical and mental strength of runners like you! The wind, rain, cold and thunder made for a miserable day but I saw so many spirited faces. Loved it!
You paced that marathon PERFECTLY. Wow, I am in awe
great job out there, especially in that nasty weather!
