Speak da Troof: blogging money

by SkinnyRunner on March 14, 2011

I want to talk about blogging, money, and monetizing blogs.  I received some feedback about how SR has become a promotional tool for companies so I want to give my viewpoint on it.

As always, I encourage and will post pretty much any comment (barring any foul language), but I always reserve the right to defend myself and my viewpoints.

So here da’s troof:

1. SR is becoming more popular and traffic is increasing.

This is a great thing because every blogger’s goal is to have more readers.  Thank you to all my readers for daily reading!  I truly appreciate it.

2. I would like to make SR profitable and eventually make enough from it to be my job.

Some people might call this selling out, but I call it the American Dream: starting your own business and having your job be your passion.   Small businesses are the backbone of our capitalistic economy and if I can create a business out of my passion (running + blogging), WHY THE HECK would I not?!?

3. Blogging takes A LOT of time and money.

If you’re a “big” blogger or have simply blogged for awhile, you already know this.  To blog 2-3x everyday takes so much behind-the-scenes work from taking pictures, editing pictures, researching topics, responding to TONS of emails, dealing with technical issues, etc.

There’s a reason why many big bloggers blog as a job: it can be a full-time job!  And if you can do it financially, good for you!  Go for it, I say.  You have a talent for it, use it!

Also, blogging isn’t as cheap as you’d think: from hosting fees to storage fees to paying technical people to fix issues, redo the site, etc.  It all takes money and a butt ton of time.

4. If I had never started blogging, I would probably have more money in my account.

At this point I haven’t made very much money on SR, not enough to break even barely, let alone account for my time.  The affiliate companies I work with pay me such as a small percentage that if you go buy a running shirt, great; I hope you like it as much as I do.  But financially, I just made one whole dollaryippee.

5. So if companies choose to send me their products for my own review or a giveaway, I have no problem accepting them.

From 26.2 Apparel sending me their whole product line to free gels from Clif, why not?

From the very beginning I have been very honest and open: I will review a product I’m interested in (that doesn’t go against my moral or ethic beliefs.  Diet pills – no.  Vitamins – sure) but will always give my honest opinion about it….

I love the fabric on the 26.2 shirts.  I don’t love Zensah’s compression sleeves.  I really enjoy CLICK’s Espresso Protein Drink as a recovery drink.  I hated Clif energy gels old formula (their new one is tasty rad).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I guess it all goes back to my philosophy on blogging: I’ll blog the way I want; if you don’t like it, that’s chill.  No one’s forcing you to read it.  (Except you, Mom.  You HAVE to)
If a company or person wants to send me a product or a check, you better believe I’ll accept it.  As long as I don’t pull a Mariah and get one from Gaddafi…  At the end of the day, 99% of bloggers would do the same thing.  And for those of you who wouldn’t, make your blogs “private” and problem’s solved.
A couple years ago a crewmember on my dad’s commercial fishing boat commented that the price of halibut was so incredibly high.  My dad responded, “Yeah we’re all overpaid, but no one’s offering to return it.”
3. Your bank account
4. Your miles
5. Your American dream
6. Your life
So there! You do what you want. I am enjoying the heck out of reading you words!
I’ve seen comments on other blogs about bloggers selling out and how awful it is that they make money by doing this — why is there something wrong with that?
Free stuff? Why not. I don’t think your blog is product overload — there are ways to show free products well and there are ways that are annoying. I think you do it well, and I appreciate reading reviews of products — it helps me determine what I should try!
Sana March 14, 2011 at 6:14 pm
Get ittt. I make money from my blog. And I happily spend it on candy or clothes.
Reply
sian March 14, 2011 at 6:15 pm
I say GO FOR IT!! I was always surprised that you don’t have google ads on your site. On our site it is 80% of our revenue. As for reviews…we don’t accept money to do the review BUT only product to review. The best of luck to making some mola!!!
Yep, I’d do it in a second! I’m all about blogging for fun and making people laugh and sharing my shock and horror at the things people do. But when a company wants to give me something, BRING IT ON. Unless it’s something I refuse to use. As long as that company doesn’t dictate how you run your blog, take the money and ruN!!
lifeisbeachykeen March 14, 2011 at 6:17 pm
I was thinking about your blog today when I was running. I absolutely love the way that you do things. I feel like you are 100% real.
I was wondering how do you get all these people to contact you? Do you contact me first? Do they stumble upon your blog and say, “Hey, that chick is pretty cool, she runs fast, she takes a crap load of pictures, and she pretty funny.” and then they offer you stuff?
I honestly don’t know how this works, but I’m super curious.
Go for it girl! People think I’m crazy when I say that my blog is a part time job. A part time job that I would LOVE to eventually be my real job. But it is hard work! I only wish I didn’t have a job that prevented me from spending more time on it:)
Hope it works out for you!
Gretchen March 14, 2011 at 6:23 pm
Just want to say – I LOVE your blog. I like the reviews (and you’re always honest about getting stuff for free to review – and honest in your review)so I don’t have to buy crap that might be horrid or can try out a product that has some good reviews.
PS I gave my friend her skinny runner shirt this weekend – and she almost cried she was so happy.
We heart Skinny runner. Don’t change or worry about the Crank-o-potomi out there.
SR I say go for it! Your charm and swagger is what intrigues people and keeps them coming back… Plug good products and make some cash at the same time! Just make sure you make some shirts in men’s sizes for the next round. -drew
Gosh, I sure hope that people aren’t hating on you for anything you do with your blog. Heck, if you aren’t making hateful remarks or spreading libel, then I think you can promote whatever products you want!
I work a full-time job, so right now, making money off blogging is completely unimportant. Good for those who can make some kind of living out of it, but I have other passions. As do you. Blog on!
Reply
Heidi Nicole March 14, 2011 at 6:34 pm
I think you are doing it right…you promote the products, host giveaways and the buttons on your page are not huge and annoying. You spend the time writing, you deserve any pennies the companies are willing to toss your way!
If the buttons on the side get annoying and you do nothing but talk about products it would be different…
Reply
Elysie March 14, 2011 at 6:34 pm
I really like your website and I’m not really bothered by the product reviews and ads. Most of the time I find the reviews to be helpful. I can see the appeal of smaller blogs where the blogger comments on comments and is more able to establish a community feel, but if that’s what a person wants, there are plenty of those out there! I don’t come to your blog for that, I read yours because it’s entertaining and motivating. Keep doing what you’re doing. Obviously you’re successful and there’s hundreds more people out there that LIKE what you’re doing than have issues with it.
If I had a big blog that people would read I would definitely try to make some money. But since I have a small blog that even bores me, I de-”monetized” it in Blogger since it’s nearly impossible to make any money that way at all.
BTW one of the reasons I read blogs is for reviews – I’d rather read a more personal and succinct “It sucks” than watch a 4 minute Runner’s World video about why it sucks.
I am new to reading your blog and new to running. I am training for my first 1/2 marathon – San Diego RNR in June. I came across your site by browsing other’s blogs.
I love your blog. You are an awesome runner – clearly – look at the miles you put in.
I would rather read a blog concerning products used by a real runner then a model in a magazine ad who never ran a day in her life.
Keep on Keep’in on!!!
To be honest, I have been noticing a lot more products being touted on the blog lately, and I’m not really into it.
I’m not upset about it or anything, because I totally agree with everything you’re saying. If it bothers me to the point that I want to stop reading, then I will.
I do realy love the blog, though, and to me, it does take away from the enjoyment when of it when I’m so obviously, at times, reading an ad, you know?
Like I said, I totally agree with you. This is your blog, and if someone offered me a dollar right now I’d take it too. Just my thoughts :)
I only tell you this ’cause you can handle it…and because the 8th grade English teacher in me cringes when I read that specific grammar mistake. Now that I have that off my chest – go forth and monetize!!
I’m definitely not a hater – I agree that it would be AWESOME to just blog full time and make a career out of it. Complete pipe dream for me, but definitely not for you.
I did read an article recently about how companies and brands are taking advantage of bloggers and my only thought in all of this is that they might be taking advantage of you! Like you said — you don’t get a huge profit (if at all) from the brands you pimp out/review. I guess as a blogger — where is the line drawn that says – enough, if you want me, you need to pay me. (hypothetical question) I don’t think that’s selling out. I think that’s smart business!
Hi SR,
I am one of those who do think your blog is way too commercial. However, I do check it regularly: it is so cheesy that it’s interesting. You just seem to manage these cheesiness and kitschiness well – and you have all the right to do it. I never commented on your blog until today, and I am surprised myself that I feel a need to support you: I agree with everything you wrote in this post, everything!
Who cares about those who dislike your blog, it seems you have lots of success with those who like it. You found your niche, and good for you!
But since I am already writing a comment for your blog, which I thought will never ever do, let me explain my irrelevant impression of the blog and of you. You are trying too hard with this commerciality and cheesiness, but you are like that also as an off-the-blog person, which can be seen in your visual appearance (I do wonder when you will realize that at your age you a different hair style and make-up might be more flattering, no offense but you do have a look as an Easter European prostitute, the one that is not forced into prostitution but does it because she finds it the easiest way up.
You keep posting several times a day although often don’t have anything to post. You do not have a link to blogs you follow although you do not mind being linked on other blogs, supposedly because you don’t want to influence your readers, but you do not mind influencing them with commercial advertising, so it is clear that you just don’t want to lose traffic too quickly to the blogs that might be more interesting.
You are an AMAZING runner. You have a nice life, good for you! You have a very positive optimistic personality, good for you!
Actually, I have a question for you: do you mind or worry that your husband is on a chubby/neglected side?
Look, SR, I do not expect you will publish this, and I am fine with this. This is my sincere opinion with scattered thoughts about your blog, which I do read frequently, just because I find about 10% interesting and because I do find you have a very interesting personality (not only in a good sense, actually primarily not).
This is a made up email.
Wish you luck and joy and happiness and success, sincerely!
SkinnyRunner March 15, 2011 at 6:21 am
thanks for taking the time to comment but mostly for finding the blog “10% interesting”. i am laughing on the inside.
so much to unpack there so im just going to focus on the “easter european prostitute” part. hahah, that made my day.
if i write anything, it’s this: my husband is not “neglected”. in ANY sense. that man is treated well and in return, he treats me pretty dang well too. maybe he just likes european prostitutes??
Reply
Ashley March 15, 2011 at 6:37 am
I believe Anne is one of the following:
1. Drunk
2. High
3. An “easter” european prostitute and english is her second language.
I meant neglected in a physical sport sense, not obese yet, though.
Anne March 15, 2011 at 8:17 am
Yes, maybe about 10% of your blog is interesting for me running-wise, but I find your personality 100% interesting – and that is why I am reading it.
Your hair style with striking artificial color and dark roots, and your rosy-cheek 80′s make-up is a bit teenageresque, in my opinion. I should have not used “Easter European prostitute”, although I really did not want to offend you. I do admire you for being positive and happy.
Sorry for my English, yes, obviously not my native tongue.
BEST!
SR thank you for being so honest with your readers and publishing comments like these. now that is entertainment!
SR you have street cred when it comes to running- what does easter anne have?! keep up the good running and fabulous blogging- you have followers for a reason.
Look SR and your fans, I did agree with 100% of the post, SR can do whatever she wants with her blog, no question about that. It is great that there are 100+ fan responses, I just offered my clumsy opinion. And it seems to me that the post was actually written for people who criticize the blog. I never have before. If I remember correctly, this is not the first post on this same topic, with SR clarifying she can do whatever she wants. So there must be many comments criticizing the blog. Why does SR cares and keeps writing about that? And I admit I read it surprisingly frequently. To me it has very little running significance, but a lot of interest regarding the blogging community. I do not blog. I just run, and like to read about it and personal stories. And I came across SR because it keeps coming up several times a day on more running relevant blogs. And that’s why I find the explanation about SR blog list private quite poor. Especially because the intention of this blog is quite clear: having fun, self-fabulousing, getting a high traffic for personal and material reasons, filling a “non fishing days”, maybe something more – and definitively nothing wrong with any of these, actually all these done pretty well!
I took time and explained my view, because this post was clearly not meant for fans with no reservations. Or it was, to count supporters who like the blog 100% ?
To Anne: Very little running significance? Really? I think this blog has a lot of running significance! I highly value the product reviews (because I’m always looking for good gear and don’t have money to waste on bad stuff) and the race reviews are really helpful. It’s good to know what a race is like, start to finish. I appreciate the fact that SR takes the time to record the details for the rest of us (THANK YOU SR!).
Keep up the honest product reviews SR!
onewhitetulip March 15, 2011 at 3:50 am
I love the product reviews! I at least know I’m getting an honest opinion. Plus, it really does help me know what gear to buy or at least look into.
If I had people throwing products at me to try out, I’d so be there.
Good luck making it full time! (Every bloggers dream!)
I found your blog about a month ago and read it everyday! I find it motivating and love the fact you have links to running apparel etc. I am a busy working mom who is trying to get her “groove” back in the running world and your blog is just what I have needed! So thank you and I hope you make a million!!!!
you can satisfy: a. some of the people some of the time; b. some of the people all of the time and; c. all of the people some of the time … only a fool thinks they can satisfy all of the people all of the time. so keep doing it the way you are. i read you and i like what you do. but what’s more important is that you seem to like what you do. let that be your happiness and ignore the nitwits. and if you need further proof, read ecclesiastes 3:22 … “I saw that there’s nothing better for people to do than to enjoy their work because that is their lot in life. Who will allow them to see what will happen after them?”
Girl, I am so with you. If someone offers me money for ANYTHING barring things against the law, you better believe I’m taking it. I think it’s awesome that you can make money on your blog, and people who call you a sell out are most likely jealous. I mean, I’ll admit that I am!
Reply
Elisha March 15, 2011 at 5:55 am
Don’t even worry about the jealous haters because they will always be there hating on something. And if they say they wouldn’t accept free stuff or money if they were in your position, they are either lying or really dumb.
Get it, girl. I would love to make $$ from my blog. And to be sent running gear to review. I think you rock and find your reviews helpful.
While there are some big blogs that I don’t like to read anymore because I get annoyed by certain aspects (I think fundraising for things like TNT, etc by raffling off a blender or something else given to you is silly…my personal opinion), I don’t think yours is like that. I would gladly accept products to review if anyone ever asked me (annnnd they haven’t…maybe one day…), so whoever these naysayers are need to be quiet because they would probably do that same thing! If it really bothers anyone that much, stop reading…I’ve done that with blogs that no longer interest me. Yours is not one of them!
SR Rocks! Everybody is a critic these days! geezy-peesy !!! I stalk your site because I think it is hilarious and motivating. The product reviews are always spot- on and relevant to running, so keep them coming. And OF COURSE you would want to earn some cash for all of your hard work……a girls got ta eat (and buy new running shoes pretty often with the amount of miles you log!)
keep knocking us dead!:)
Lady, I think your blog rocks. From one “Easter European prostitute” to another!
Reply
jessalyn March 15, 2011 at 7:17 am
so i don’t comment that often, but i read everyday. i mostly don’t comment because funny is my thing more than running is my thing (but to be honest, i suck equally at both) so i don’t usually say anything because i don’t have the wits to match your funnies, or the athleticism to contribute to the conversation.
as far as this topic is concerned- i’m all for you getting yours- you put time and money into your blog, why not get something back from it. as long as you keep your reviews honest, which you always do- i’m loving it. i am sitting here in my mizuno waverunners right now due to your recommendation- and i love them.
here is my question- i read you in my reader everyday. does that not count in your hits or whatever? do you know what i’m saying? i don’t know what i’m saying, so if you do, you are brilliant. but if i can give you an extra fraction of a penny or so everyday, i will be sure to click over, as opposed to reading in reader.
lastly, now that i have distracted myself enough to pick my jaw up off of the floor from the european prostitute comment- first of all you are hot. work it. i’ll be honest, i will visit other blogs, and if there are never pics of themselves, i don’t stick around. (which is weird seeing as i barely ever put my mug on my blog, but whatevs. i’m a stalker) secondly, that was so considerate of them to let you know they used a fake email. anons are rad!
and now i wrote a book report. this makes up for like never commenting, right? right. i wish it had been a little more clever…
SkinnyRunner March 15, 2011 at 7:21 am
thanks for the book! maybe i can work a publishing deal for you, hehe.
im not really sure how the reader vs the site hits work, but i dont think its anything to worry about. read however or where ever you want to. but thanks for the consideration!
I have a full time super busy big girl panties job…and a 4 year old+husband….I have a blog…it sucks….I posted randomly at best…I would love to do more…but I do NOT have the time…literally…well, maybe if I found more joy in personal blogging than I found in reading SR..but I don’t so, in my spare moments…I read SR….when I got my SR shirt…husband said…so, she is selling shirts…my reply…YEP and I love it and wear it proudly!! And out for a 5 mile run I went on SUNDAY morning…because of the big girl panty job that pays bills but leaves very little time for other stuff.
So my reply…is I look forward to you blogging, it is my guilty pleasure on daily basis and when I began reading your blog…it was just before your fishing last year….and I was actually sad that you were gone….as pathetic is that is…it is lke your favorite tv show goes off- season finale! So keep blogging and fosho keep making money so we don’t have a finale that doesn’t resume! I love it! have a great day and I pray for all good times to come your way! The way I see it….you are able to be you, do what you love, make some money and still manage to put God an your family first! Who could ask for more?
Hi SR! You do not owe anyone (well maybe that adorable husband of yours) an explanation of anything! I love your blog and I think you are adorable, Easter European Prostitute looks and all~hee hee. I am old enough to be your mother and you have inspired me to go ahead and run a 5k that I have always wanted to for as long as I can remember. Yah, thats right my husband and I will be running our first 5k for our upcoming anniversary.
Thanks for the inspiration and keep up the great job. Dont pay any attention to the naysayers ~ k?!
Surely you have aspects of your life that you don’t choose to share on your blog, and I’m also pretty sure that everyday doesn’t provide you with something to blog about. So, it’s completly understandable that you choose to fill “down time” with information that may be useful to your readers. What’s the problem?!?!?
I haven’t ran since November due to sickness ( I work at a daycare). But I am itching to get back out there, and some of it is from reading your blog. I love to hear about new products that will help improve my running or to make me look good. So I say keep it up. You are doing a great job, and if you want to make a buisness out of it go for it. I love my blog and blogging and I love your blog because you are real and honest and you make me laugh. And you’re a pretty sick runner. IF you get paid for something, all the power to you. I actually enjoy your product reviews. I love that I discovered(and won) BIC bands. A company that has a great product, gives back and is much more affordable than sweaty bands. A good thing for a stay-at-home running mom! It’s nice to discover new products through blog reviews.
Oh my, my. So, I wanted to comment and let know know that I love the blog, product reviews and all, but I really like how you are 100% real about everything, even posting bizarre and inappropriate comments. Plus, I think you are funny (obviously) and goofy and pretty (not a stalker, I swear!) but you don’t take yourself too seriously. I’m glad you are making money from the blog.
Maybe you could create some sort of support group or club for Easter Prostitutes….bahahahaha…I would totally join, and be proud of it!
I feel really sorry for Anne. I’ve been drunk and blabbered on about nothing relevant and pissed people off before, and it’s pretty embarassing.
Religious views aside, I’m kind of intrigued by the Easter Prostitute. Does that come before or after the egg hunt?
I know I’m super late on this topic, but I’ll throw my 2 cents in anyway. I like your product reviews. I’ll admit that I’ve stopped reading other blogs when they started to become bad commercials. I like that you review running-related stuff. I’m a new runner and it helps to have ideas of products that my help me step my game up (from ground zero). Your reviews are useful to your audience, so it’s a win-win situation.
