What an event

by SkinnyRunner on January 31, 2011

Saturday I was invited to the “Be Fit and Pain Free in 2011” event in LA hosted by Salonpas and Kathy Kaehler

The husband drove up with me because he and Kelly’s husband went golfing while we went to the event.  I think I even saw them secretly exchanging braided friendship bracelets…

On our way up we stopped at Starbucks and I manhandled him into taking yet another picture of me.  You got me for life, baby.

At the event I met a bunch of fabulous people and wondered why I didn’t have any friends.

Kathy and I.  You think of celeb trainer, you think of Jillian Michaels, you think of a very manly woman who you will shake hands with and she’ll break your rotator cuff off…

But Kathy was really friendly, personable, funny and womanly.  Even though she obviously knows her stuff and could kick some serious workout booty, it wasn’t like she had a breakfast of glass shards and ‘roids either.

The other bloggers that I missed pictures of are Caryn from Rockin Mama, Alyssa from Mommy Warriors, and the funny Rose from Eat Drink and be Meiri.

After meeting everyone, we got down to working out.  We did about 10 1 minute circuit stations 3 times each.

The mini trampolines=fun.  Triceps dips=make someone you really don’t like do these.  They hurt.

After the 35-40 minute workout, we sat down with Kathy and learned a little her and Salonpas.

TOMORROW Kathy is launching a new program called Sunday Set-up

The idea is that every Sunday you “set-up” your meals for the week by shopping at your local farmers’ market (or natural food market) and selecting, then prepping foods that can be made into a week’s worth of recipe ingredients.

And she goes into celebrities’ kitchens, peaks in their fridges and helps them do the same thing – “set up” for the week.

ssgallery-25Kathy

Since I celeb stalk with the best of them, looking into a celebrity’s fridge is my holy grail!  But beyond the stalking, Sunday Setup provides things like healthy grocery lists, recipes, and other great information so check out Sunday Set-up tomorrow when it launches.

Back to the event: we were given a goody bag from Salonpas.

IMG_0331

Including samples of Salonpas pain patch which is the only FDA-approved over the counter pain patch.

Monica

I’ve used these on my hip since it occasionally gets sore from piriformis, and some girls even mentioned using it on their necks for headaches.  It’d also be great for back pain.  Or if you want your husband to stop screaming at the football game on tv, it might even work as duct tape.

The patches give relief for 12 hours and are superthin so if you wanted, you could plaster your entire body with them. (hmm, Rose)

After the event, about 10 of us went to the Sagebrush Cantina in Calabasas for lunch.

It was a great event and a fun day meeting new people and bloggers.  A big thanks to Salonpas, the Zocalo Group, and Kathy Kaehler.

**Although you’re probably thinking I had to pay all these people to hang out with me, Salonpas actually provided the event and swag in exchange for my opinions according to FTC regulations.

Question: What’s one of the hardest exercises you do?

My string cheese arms are screaming tricep dips.

I used the Salonpas patch last week on my knee, which always hurts, seeing as when I was in a car accident they put a rod in my leg that was too long, so for a year and a half, the rod was shoved into my knee cap…and it made a huge difference!!!! I hardly ever find pain relief from anything when it comes to my knee and the patch really, really worked! So glad you had the info on it!

Pushups are my killer. My husband’s been trying to get me to attempt pull-ups, but so far, I’m pretty pathetic on that front.

Looks like a fun day, though!

I feel ya on the pushups! They are the worst! My husband had me attempt pull ups too….lol key word attempt LOL

I don’t know why, but I would loove to look into a celebrity fridge too. Also, I hate any sort of upper body exercise. I never do them so it never gets any better.

so glad to hear that you had such a great time!! Jealous that I didn’t get to go! :( I seriously would’ve bribed you with a bag of spice drops!! :) Nice goody bag!

Salonpas is great! I remember the salonpas group during the LA marathon. They were there right when I needed them. They sprayed my legs with that stuff front/back and it really helped subside the pain/fatigue for that last few miles. (salonpas was offered AFTER I was offered beer and candy) :)

Pushups, tricep dips are killer for me! I think that us runners naturally have weaker upper bodies. I also just picked up a kettleball to get stronger on top and that’s pretty tough too!! :)

Have a great Monday!!

sounds like a fun event!

so, spill it- how do you get your hair to do what it’s doing there? i think you said before that you tease it a bit. i wear those bands on my head and they end up sliding off! i usually find wearing them with dirty, second day, messy hair helps… but yours looks so pretty! HOW DO YOU PULL IT OFF?

Bess January 31, 2011 at 9:00 am

When I used to play soccer the weightlifting workouts would require us to do “olympic style” lifts…which included power cleans, hang cleans, deadlifts, etc. Those are not fun. I refuse to do any olympic lifts any more because I don’t enjoy having trap muscles the size of my head. Other than that I enjoy the challenge of lifting. Feeling strong is fun :)

Pull-ups are super hard for me….
I would love, love, LOVE to try those pain patches for my back pain (from Lyme Disease)….I tried Lidoderm patch and Flector, which is like an Advil patch….they kinda suck…

hardest workout – kettlebells.

That looks like a great event!!!!
I hate tricep dips, too! The hardest exercise I do though, would probably be either planks or supermans. Not that either of the moves are particularly hard, but I try to hold them at least 90 seconds.

Love the idea of Sunday setup- when I was a working mom I was so organized with meals, but now that I stay at home I’ve slacked- will look for this with great interest! My evil exercise is rollups- where you lay down and then roll yourself up into standing position while lifting a weight up. Makes my old lady knees scream.

sunday set up sounds like a smart plan. espesh for people who might need to eat glass shards for breakfast – takes a lotta planning, haha.

JRo January 31, 2011 at 10:27 am

hardest thing i do is adding a drop-set onto the end of my sets. do 2-3 sets of regular saaaaayyyy…tricep push downs. then on the last set increase the weight and rep out until you can’t do anymore then immediately drop about 10% in weight and rep out again, then drop weight 1-2 more times, repping out on each weight with no breaks btwn increments. so for me i do 2 sets at 50lbs with a v-bar, then go up to 60lbs for about 20 reps, 50lbs 20 reps, 40lbs 20 reps, and 30lbs 20-ish reps. dead arms. but drop sets are great too on leg extensions and leg curls and biceps.

The Salonpas patches are great for cramps too! I put them on my lower back or abs, and it’s like having a heating pad you can take with you.

Reply

Rose January 31, 2011 at 10:56 am

Pull ups kill me. Lame.

If I die from Salonpas overdose after coating my whole body with them, my ghost is going to haunt you.

Though, they are the perfect color to use as nipple shields.

I do Crossfit three times a week and it is always miserably hard. Push ups or anything involving the shoulders are my worst days!

Reply

Amy Kreidler January 31, 2011 at 11:06 am

My hardest, without a doubt, are “Planks to Push Ups”. Three sets of 12. Kills me every time, especially because when my trainer makes me do them, it’s at the end of the workout when the rest of my body is already quivering!

Reply

JRo January 31, 2011 at 11:24 am

ooo yah! i do push-ups to planks…what a killer on the abs and arms.

Push-ups! I’m doing a push-up challenge right now, so I’m working on them, but I have no idea how people knock out 50 in a row without a sweat.

Ami @ Running in Heels January 31, 2011 at 12:01 pm

That looks like it was fun!!

Push ups are impossible for me. And too bad because tank top weather is almost here!!

i love all your workout tanks! i noticed that you have this one in a couple colors. what brand is it? that is the kind i need, that way i can hide my muffin top!

Reply

Jenna January 31, 2011 at 12:28 pm

looks fun, but ugh… looks hard. Upper body is my weakest area and so its hard to work up the motivation to do it.

Plus 3lbs. dumb bells look re-dic!

Miles and Manhattan January 31, 2011 at 12:48 pm

Looks fun! I think my abs are my weakest, doing certain crunches makes me want to give up and accept a little extra chub…!!

You look so pretty here! I love your hair and tank top!

Hardest thing I can do, since I cannot(yet?) do a pull up, would be burpees. While doing them I feel like I’m going to pass out and or throw up, but when I’m done I’m so happy I got through them.

I wanna go!! What a fun day and like always I am obsessed with your workout clothes! Any ab work kills me for days….I guess I am supposed to do that regularly or something, boo!

Reply

This sounds like such a great day! Thanks for the report. Worst exercise for me is also anything triceps related. In fact my triceps took one look at that photo and started twitching in sympathy.

Wish I lived somewhere where I could walk around in capris and a cardigan in February!!

Oh sick… my arms are so weak. I try to do some tricep junk, but I’d rather be able to lift my coffee cup to my face the next morning, so I usually skip em.

Do you do Sunday Setup, or are you planning to at all? I think it’s a great idea but I’m not sure I’d know what I’d wanna eat for the whole week.

When you say you are sore from piriformis…what do you mean? piriformis is a muscle silly, we all have it :-)

Reply

SkinnyRunner January 31, 2011 at 6:15 pm

last year i had piriformis syndrome in my butt/hip where it was super sore and i took 4 months off running so occasionally when i run in 4-5 consecutive days that area starts to feel the tiniest bit tight and sore.

I didn’t think I would feel the workout the next day, but I actually did. I don’t do circuit training and I think I need to start incorporating it.

I want a play by play on each cupcakes you guys ate at Crumbs.

Your hair looked so cute that day. I wish I can fix mine that way too. I’m going to try it. Your hair is my inspiration, lol!

I thought Kathy Kaehler’s name sounded familiar… I think she does Arms with Attitude on Exercise TV (through Fios OnDemand). I’ve done that 10 minute workout a couple times.

I learned about 2 weeks ago at a crazy intense bootcamp class that the exercise I hate the most is wall sits. A true lowww wall sit. Oh, and then with your arms straight above your head. with weights. These hurt so bad…and my legs are strong.

Where did you get the long sleeved shirt you are wearing in this post? I am always seeking out long tops and this one looks perfect!

Hardest exercise for me is a burpee. I can barely do one :)
