No running post today because today is a rest be lazy and watch Jersey Shore day.
A couple days ago Kim Kardashian posted on her blog about how young girls shouldn’t idolize the Mtv Teen Mom stars.
Kim Kardashian and one of the Teen Mom 2 stars.
I saw a story about a Memphis high school where 90 young female students were either pregnant or have given birth this year! I just couldn’t believe this and I find it so sad and disturbing.
It seems that shows like Teen Mom are all of a sudden making teen pregnancy seem cool in the eyes of young girls.
The kids from these shows are all over the news, even on the covers of magazines, and have been become almost like celebrities, but girls, these are not people you should idolize!
Having a baby so young shouldn’t be seen as the trendy thing to do.
Reportedly the girls make $60-65,000 per season and they are definitely all over the news….
And children of teen moms statistically don’t do as well socio-economically as children of older parents.
**Children of teen parents are 50% more likely to repeat a grade and are less likely to graduate from high school than children of older parents.
**Only 77% of children born to teen parents will receive a high school diploma compared to 89% of children born to older parents.
**Fathers are less likely to be in the same home as children of teen parents than homes of older parents.
**Children born to teen mothers are more likely to be abused, abandoned or neglected.
**Teenage sons of teen mothers are 2.7 times more likely to be incarcerated than sons of older mothers.
**Children of teen parents are 2 to 3 times more likely to run away from home than children of older childbearing mothers.
**Children born to unmarried, high school drop-out teen mothers are 10 times more likely to live in poverty than those born to married women. statistics from here
But should Kim Kardashian be the one to call them out??
(This pic is on her own website)
She makes a ton of money from multiple reality shows and her career got started by making a sex tape.
What do you think? Should Kim speak out or keep her yapper shut?

I think I need more pictures of Kim before I make my decision
barf.
He he he! I happily agree with you!
By the way, your previous post had me in stitches. But I knew if I commented about it, it would have been lost in the giveaway comments! Thanks for the mid day laughs!
okay so I was kidding-i have never once watched their show. What is their frigging claim to fame anyway? Honestly-what can any of them do? They are completely talent-less.
I saw the same report; Did you see the one where Amber & Jenelle response to Kim? Lovely.
I don’t really think Kim should be weighing in on Teen Moms. Isn’t she being sued for the Kardashian Kard?
Can you post the link to the Amber & Jenelle responses? I need a good laugh.
http://celebritypregnancy.sheknows.com/2011/01/21/teen-mom-stars-amber-and-jenelle-blast-kim-kardashian/
I say Keep the Yapper Shut; I can’t stand any of the Kardashii.
Umm…I really don’t think Kim has a lot of room to talk about being a good role model for anyone! What she is doing seems more HS-drama-eske than anything else.
That being said, the fact these girls are getting so much popularity for popping out kids before they get to walk across a stage to get their diploma is just stupid! We downgraded our TV so no MTV for us and I can’t say that I’m upset about that!
It makes you wonder what these girls (and their kids/SOs/family) are going to think of themselves 10 years from now. Unfortunately they will probably be able to say “when I was a kid we had morals and kept our pants on until AT LEAST 13!”. Hello world!
It’d be interestins if she’d preface these opinions with, “I know I’m not the best example of good sexual choices, but….”
You are seriously so right! She has a sex video for goodness sake. I don’t think she is one to open her mouth about role models. Silly.
Kim really isn’t a role model but its good thing that someone of her level of celebrity said something. I’m 25 and can barely function as a human being. I can’t imagine having a kid. These young girls need a wakeup call. Kim’s hair looks amazeballs in that pic, btw. Super jealous.
Keep.her.mouth.shut. Not that MTV isn’t morally despicable, but Kim has a lot of things to talk about…but guiding women in the right direction sure isn’t one of them.
I feel REALLY strong about this subject……Kim needs to shut her mouth…pretty hypocritical if you ask me…
Now~ on that note, these teen moms need to put their children first! My hubby and I are trying to adopt right now, and although every situation is different, I feel that if a pregnant girl is a teen, if she is single, and if she can not provide a child with the type of life that 2 parents could have….she needs to consider adoption. Or at the very least consider what would be best for the child. *stepping off soapbox*
We are an awesome couple who wants kids and if you or anyone knows of one of these teen moms…tell them to go here: http://www.kleinersadopt.blogspot.com
And now that you’re on this subject….I need to market myself…sorry SR…but PLEASE tell all your readers, or at least let this comment show
Yea, post your douchebag ways so that anyone considering giving their BABY to strangers can see what pathetic losers you are and therefore avoid you. Nature is telling you something. Just because young mothers can reproduce and you can’t doesn’t give you dibs to their kids.
Wow, posting this response doesn’t make you a douchebag? Or a pathetic loser? Interesting “logic.”
Dear Leanne,
Please obtain some professional psychological help. After reading your comments it is clear that you are disturbed and unstable. Put the mouse down and go outside for a bit. While you’re out there, hop in the car and drive to the nearest Psychiatric center for an evaluation.
Yours truely,
Kristi
wow, a bit harsh.
i’m sorry you are so upset!
have a fun day!
I don’t agree with Kim having her sex tape but other than that I don’t think she’s been a horrible role model, she’s known for only having monogamous relationships and she said she is mostly concerned with her own teenage sisters and their friends seeing the teen moms and she didn’t want younger girls thinking its okay to get pregnant so young. While she might not be the best example setter, I think what she is saying is still true and I’m actually glad someone said something!
That MTV show disgusts me. I was a father as a teen. I know what it takes. Glamorizing it won’t help at all.
She’s not a good role model at all and shouldn’t be someone girls are looking up to, but I actually agree with her for once! How ’bout that?! It seems rather hypocritical that she is talking about good role models, but I guess it’s good someone is speaking out. Airing that show sends out a bad signal to other young girls…but let’s face it…TV stations will do anything for ratings.
I think so b/c she has witnesses her sister being a mother. I watch the Teen Mom episodes & agree, teens shouldn’t idolize this lifestyle. It’s not glamorous. I think it’s so great that MTV is doing this show though, b/c it seems to give yougnters & perhaps even anyone who isn’t a parent some insight to how tough being a single parent (Mom primarily) really is.
I had my son single & at 23…hands down…HARD. But luckily I was 23 & not in my teens. I still feel like I had him very young but I grew up & my life became sacrifice for my now lil boy. Worth it ALL…but hard work & sacrifice.
Also, Kim is & may be somewhat( or a lot of) a sex icon, but least she’s right from wrong. And blogged/posted bout it.
Good topic
witnessed*
I think it’s kinda weird that she’s talking about it, but she has a really good point.
While I honestly dislike the Teen Moms show and general foundation, I also think that Kim isn’t the best person to speak out against it….
As I recall, it wasn’t a public sex tape it was a private one she made with a boyfriend. Maybe not her best choice and definitely one I suspect she regrets. It is not my place to judge her.
It’s interesting she points out the plight of these girls is sad and disturbing and she doesn’t want the youth of America to idolize these girls in this situation and this is all we could pull out of what she said.
I agree with you…Kim wasn’t even the one who distributed the sex tape and did everything to get it back…and I think since then she’s done things to show young girls how strong a woman can be on her own, without having to have a man. She may have become famous from the tape going public, but since then, she has been a very successful businesswoman in many areas. I think the people who think she’s a hypocrite don’t really know the Kardashian story, all they know is she has a sex tape. I’m not claiming to be her bff, but I think she’s set a powerful example of how to be a successful independent woman.
I agree with you.
OHHH YEAH! She is a very successful businesswoman by promoting weightloss pills! She really is a role model! I hope young women all over the world know that if they have issues with weight, they just have to take some pills and it will drop instantly. This woman has NO RIGHT to say anything.
While Kim is the epitome of pot calling the kettle black in this scenario, she has a point that these girls ARE being held up as some sort of twisted example of what is “okay”. Or that it is perfectly fine to be an unemployed, uneducated teenage parent.
Maybe if there was a little more emphasis on sexual education/protection, because clearly the abstinence path ain’t working, teens who ARE having sex might have a little more education to arm themselves with when they do make such an adult decision.
It’s like the 90210 episode from WAY back (and I mean the original show) where the parents committee was protesting teaching kids about sex in school and Donna (of all people) had some fabulous to-the-point analogy about teaching your kids to swim even though they know they aren’t allowed to go in the pool….just in case.
I think Kim needs to reflect on her own money making. She could have been a teen mom herself, it’s not like she was chaste…which we all know. She just didn’t have an oops. Maybe if there was more sex-ed teen pregnancy would continue to decrease.
Interesting statistics. As a product of teen parents, I’m happy to say none of those apply to me or my siblings. My parents divorced when I was 10 and I actually lived with my dad until I went to college. I graduated from high school, put myself through and graduated from college, bought a house, got married and am expecting my first at 26.
Being born into bad circumstances doesn’t have to dictate your life. Just throwing that out there.
I see what you are saying, how and why she’s a star isn’t admirable at all. But she is sending a positive message that may make an impression on some of these young girls that idolize her (I guess that’s sad too but hey I used to love Britney Spears when I was 16 and I turned out semi-ok haha).
I think Kim has a point, but she has no credibility. She certainly has contributed to the over-sexualizing of young women, so if it concerns her, perhaps her insights should be applied at home.
My thoughts are that the teen girls that believe getting pregnant is a cool idea because of something they saw on TV are probably the same teen girls that would take advice from Kim K.
I think Kim has the right to say whatever she wants, whether people will take her seriously is another issue.
It’s a very important message, considering how scary it is to see children having their own children! Although Kim herself is not the best example, I’m glad that someone who is idolized by young girls is advocating for something as important as teen pregnancy.
Kim is the reason there are teen mums! She promotes promiouscuity, dressing like a hoe and jumping from guy to guy like a flea goes from dog to dog.
The reason that girls are having sex as young is they are is because people like Kim Kardashian and Miley Cyrus are given the time of day by society.
And parents who let the E! Channel raise their kids for them.
Whoa, and that was my rant
I do not by any means think she is a great role model but I think what she said is very true and agree with it. Im just wondering if she actually wrote that herself or her publicist did it.
train wreck central…all of them.
Sara
Maybe Kim should look inside of her own family first before she calls anyone else’s situaution out. Her own sister, Kourtney, had a baby w/o being married & w/ a man who was not true to her. Just b/c Kourtney was not a teenager does not make this situation any different!
Her other 2 younger sister who are just TURNING teenagers look like they are following in her footsteps by the way they dress stanky & pose in magazines…what next? S*X tapes like Kim was in & continues to be in!
Kim is just lucky she hasn’t gotten pregnant yet…who knows maybe she has & we don’t know about it?!!!….LOL!
She is about as DIRTY as they get! She has no room to talk!!
I do not agree with all those statistics either….I know first hand!! They are not true in all causes…just the ones they WANT to release to the public.
Why exactly is Kim Kardashian famous? I think the skit on SNL this past weekend about the Kardashian sisters was pretty spot on. They all look like hookers and act like idiots.
But… if Kim’s reaching a big group of teens then she should speak out. Maybe she should keep her trap shut about dressing modestly though.
I think she’s a terrible role model herself, but unfortunately, she is still a role model. So I’m glad she spoke out against it because it does seem like teenage pregnancy and motherhood is being glamourized to young girls, and the more people in the public eye who speak out against such a sad and horrible epidemic, the better imo.
SHUT YA YAPPPER Kimmy!!!!!
Kim has an audience and for once is trying to use it to better our world not just pad her wallet. Give her a break!
i think Kim is right in saying that…MTV and these magazines sometimes make teen motherhood look easy..and that your gonna have so many supporters and end up on the cover of crappy tabloid magazines..like these girls are famous for not knowing how to practice safe sex, and practically being babies themselves..Kim was a grown woman and knows how to play her cards (as much as the world hates to admit it) She didnt bring another life into her consequences like those girls did
you can practice safe sex and get pregnant. so don’t be ignorant to that fact.
Yes, but your chances of becoming pregnant while practicing safe sex are DRASTICALLY reduced.
And the whole immaculate conception thing probably didn’t come into play in any of these pregnancies, either.
Let’s not kid ourselves here.
pretty sure almost everyone of those girls admitted to not using protection while having sex..hence the whole teenage pregnancy thing….
If she wants to be a good role model she needs to put her girls under wraps because there is way too much showing in those photos.
I believe in second chances and her turning her life around. Just put some clothing on!
Seriously? Whenever I watch this show I am definitely not jealous I didn’t have a child while I was young and unemployed. Who watches that show and thinks it is “cool” to have kids at that age? It is my form of birth control, and I am 23. In fact, I feel bad for them!
also, like I said in a reply to another comment… besides the point that Kim has a sex tape, she promotes weightloss PILLS. That in NO WAY is healthy! You know how many girls she makes an impression on? I mean apparently to lose weight you just have to take these pills and workout 25/8. Please.
This is a nauseating conversation. I have lost all taste for this posting and this blog.
This conversation has nothing to do with the blog! It’s an open-ended posting. If you don’t want to read it, scroll back up.
I agree with whoever said the Kardashians should keep their nose out of well almost everything.
I’m from Memphis (not living their now, but my family does) and what the media distorted is: Frayser reportedly has a “program” from pregnant teens- so they transfer there which blows up the stats.
2. These pregnant teens got a baby shower(!!!) ya know, for all their efforts. That was the principal’s “what should we do” moment. (obviously throw a baby shower).
At first Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant did not glorify teenage pregnancy. But US Weekly did. And MTV is buying into that for ratings. What’s more sad, MTV will continue to air shows glorifying teen pregnancy for ratings and sadly more teens will get pregnant because of this. It also has a lot to do with the fact you can’t teach sex Ed in schools- only abstinence. Which I believe does not work. I know that is an entirely different topic, but where else are these kids going to get educated on sex? Their parents?! Not these cases.
Touche to Kim for finally having something wise and worthwhile to say! I have to say I agree with Kim 100% on this one. I don’t like her in general or support her and any of her endorsements or shows, but that is not to say that she doesn’t have a valid argument/point.
To point the finger at Kim is commit a logical fallacy known as ad hominem, or attacking the person rather than the argument they bring up. Seriously, some people need to educate themselves and work on bettering themselves rather than watching these shows. I will say that I do think Kim could clean up her image as well if she wants to be a better role model herself.
And to those who say that “Teen Mom” doesn’t promote teenage pregnancy- they have a new season out, don’t you think that some stupid young girls are dying to get on it? Especially when Amber’s on the cover of a tabloid every week, which does further glamorize being a teen mom and makes it more of a social norm. I think that teenage pregnancy rates are already absurd and this show is not helping.
I’m not sure if anyone posted this or not but did anyone see the who is it dr. drew show on teen pregnancy and abortion? I read some article (don’t know how reliable) that teen pregnancy rates in the U.S actually went down since the airing of 16 & pregnant. Kids are seeing how hard it is to raise a baby often with an absent and/or deadbeat teen dad. It’s not as glamourous as they thought.
While this is a good thing, I highly doubt it was because of the show.
No offense, but I doubt it.
And, this is where my interest in your blog ends. Tip: keep your posts to running, political topics like the slut shaming you are doing is ridiculous. Did you get those stats from your church? Cute. Like someone said, MTV has made teen pregnancy rates go down. But going beyond pop culture, the worst thing for increasing unplanned pregnancy has been abstinence only education. Go figure.
This was a really shockingly pathetic post from you. Too bad.
Dearest Leanne,
Thank you for letting ME know what I should post to meet YOUR needs. I’ve always been worried that MY posts won’t be exactly what YOU want. or not.
If you would take a second and go click on the stats link, you’d see that those statistics came from the National Research Council Institute of Medicine in DC. But you were really close in saying they came from “my church”. or not.
It is ignorant in my opinion to say that MTV made the teen birth rate go down because experts don’t assume that. It went down in 2009 from 2008 and many experts are attributing it to the recession, not Amber from Teen Moms. Read up on, educate yourself. or not.
love SR
Leanne- I’m sorry- I NEVER comment on blogs really (unless SPR says something completely hilarioss and I just cant keep my pee to myself..ok, so I guess I comment a lot then)…But seriously who are YOU to judge SR’s post like that? Talk about turning a positive into a negative?!! Geez, lady…I mean this in the nicest of ways….but get a life. Why would you take the time to comment like that when you have nothing good nice or useful to say? Bummer.
hahahaha your church. people are freakin’ genius around here. good call with writing what you want. how dare she get all over you for writing on your own blog? ha.
Hey SR!
I think this is the same person who wrote a VERY rude response to Melissa K’s comment (to which I also commented).
Ignore her. She is clearly ‘really shockingly pathetic’.
Leanne,
I think I speak for most of the readers here, but we would all be very grateful if your interest in this blog DID end and we never have to see your negative, pitiful comments again. Go be miserable somewhere else. You and your opinions/comments are not wanted here.
This was clearly a cruel post meant to make SR feel bad, but for the sake of being Devils Advocate, does anyone understand where Leanne might be coming from? Perhaps she was a fan of SR, and a happy teenage mom of an amazing child, and felt berated by this post and the many comments that voice disdain for teen moms. That might make a teen mom burst
I was a teen mom. I am 29 now with a beautiful & intelligent 12 year old daughter. Unlike most teen mom stories I am still with her father (14 years later). Having my daughter as a teen was very hard but it made me the strong person I am today. I think that Kim meant well. I also read that teen pregnancy rates are down. I work at a teen mom & teen pregnancy prevention group and every single girl said that the mtv show made them NOT want to have kids – it showed them how difficult it really is.
Credit to you for addressing such a touchy subject. I have had a huge problem with this show from the moment I saw it on TV. A reality star probably doesn’t have a lot of room to address the downfalls of other reality stars…but the show has turned these teenage mothers into celebrities. It sends the wrong message to easily influenced youth.
This is quite a volatile comment thread, I’m not posting my opinion at all.
I was most surprised by your response to leeanne’s comment. You are completly justified in defending yourself, however the snarky tone of your response shocked me.
I stumbled across your blog by chance, and although I enjoy your running posts I’m surpised at your obsession with celebrity culture.something about it doesn’t seem quite … Christian.
If I’ve offended you with a “snarky tone”, my apologies. That’s never my intent to offend anyone. I’m human, I screw up, and thank goodness I’m forgiven because I’m the biggest sinner of them all.
As far my “obsession” with celeb gossip, there isn’t one. 90% of what i say on here is in a joking tone… when I say Gisele better watch her back because here comes supermodel SR, I’m joking. I’m really not a model.
I don’t see having an interest in celebrity culture as sinful or unChristian because no where in the Bible does it say that. I also dance (well, I try. It’s more spastic movements) and have the occasional glass or two of champagne. I don’t see that as wrong either. But if it offends you, you can email me at skinnyrunnerblog@gmail and we can definitely talk more about it and Christianity in general.
thanks for reading and commenting.:)
I work with teens–every single day. They ARE watching Teen Mom and they ARE looking to Kim K. as a role model. It’s sad, but at least Kim said something reletively smart–being a teen mom is hard. It’s not about keeping the life you had pre-child. If the teens are looking to her for guidance, then at least she spouted something right.
There are pregnant teens where I work and it breaks my heart. Thanks for posting those facts/stats–I shared many of them with my teens and they were shocked!
It’s not MTV or OK Magazine’s fault–they’re just going with what sells. It’s the fault of our entire society. Pregnant teens should not be made into celebrities. They should get help planning out their future with a child–continuing their education and making sure that the next generation is better off than theirs.
I also send kudos to you for broaching this subject. I, also, have been wondering WTH? when it comes to MTV and their shows and how they affect our youth. This new SKINS show is just another example of their irresponsibility.
I agree, what started out as a show showing the negative side to teen pregnancy has turned them into celebrities. Very sad.
I also applaud you, SkinnyRunner, for the statements you have made concerning YOUR blog. It is YOUR blog. Read it or not. Our choice. I choose to and I enjoy it EVERY DAY.
Just FYI- your blog gives me 5-10 minutes of joy every day. I visit often because I always get a laugh and end up smiling! Thank you! I find your blog motivational, inspirational and entertaining in that order.
i’m a couple days behind in blog-reading, so this post is kinda pointless/moot but i’d like to second this 100%.
wowza, people are taking all this far too personally and negatively. Blogs are the perfect canvas to debate, add humor, and bring up any topics that the BLOGGER chooses. I look forward to reading your posts SR, and the sarcasm and humor make it that much better! Chill out to the negative nellies and let’s continue to enjoy that SR can exercise her freedom of speech.
Oh SR..I think I love you and your blog a little more everyday!
