I have more Vegas pictures and posts, but I have to get this race review up since it’s already a week late…
The Seattle Marathon was held on November 28th; I can’t remember how much early entry was but late entry was $125 for the full marathon and $100 for the half. About 7,500 people ran the half and 2300 ran the full.
THE EXPO
The expo was held at the downtown Westin hotel. It was decent, not really big but my mom and I did manage to score some samples and freebies.
We went Saturday evening and it wasn’t crowded at all; I was able to grab my bib and goodie bag quickly and then check out the booths.
THE START
The race started downtown Seattle right next to the Space Needle and the EMP which was a pretty sweet place to start. Plus, there wasn’t any line for the porta potties when I used them! booyah.
I easily got in the start area and close to the front with only a few minutes to spare; they weren’t crowded at all. I think this was because there wasn’t that many people running the full.
I don’t think there were numbered corrals, but there were pacers.
The marathon walkers started at 7:15am, half marathon walkers/runners at 7:30 and marathon runners at 8:15am, all right on time.
THE COURSE
The course was what really made this race: it was beautiful and scenic. I loved that the course seemed to change often to different sections so it kept your interest and didn’t get boring.
You start downtown, run across a floating bridge, through Seward Park, along the water, through more parks and then ended up finishing in Memorial Stadium.
A heads up: there was a tunnel we ran through in the beginning of the race around mile 4 where I lost garmin reception and so my garmin was off for about .3 miles the whole race.
The course is mostly small, rolling hills until the end: around mile 20 you hit some steep ones but it eventually finishes downhill.
COURSE SUPPORT
There wasn’t many spectators, but the few that were there were very friendly and encouraging. There was water and Gatorade every 2 miles and 2 GU spots at mile 9 and 18, I think.
POST RACE
Right after the race I got a heat blanket (needed this because it was chilly!) and water. Then you walked to the Recovery Area which was inside a nearby expo building. This was also the family meeting area, and it was great that it was indoors and warm.
I thought there was supposed to be coffee and hot soup in the recovery area, but I didn’t see either. I didn’t see any food in there.
THE NEGATIVES
-The timing chip was an ankle bracelet that had to be worn on your ankle. I’ve never seen anything like it, but it pretty much looked like a alcohol monitoring bracelet. I must have worn mine too tight because the next day my ankle was sore.
-I’ve never used a bag drop, but I read that to retrieve the bags after the race, people had to climb the bleacher stairs at the Memorial Stadium. not fun after running 26 miles….
-There really wasn’t much food or refreshments after the race.
-The shirt design is sorta plain…
SUMMARY
This is a great, smaller race in a big city marathon, and the course is really what makes it awesome. After running Las Vegas and being completely bored with that course, I appreciate how scenic and interesting Seattle was.
It does lack some of the frills of bigger races, but I think the friendly spectators and great sights make up for it. I’d rate it a 7.76 out of 10.
TIPS
-Be aware of the weather! Weather can be super inclement in Seattle so be watching it to know how to dress appropriately. It was perfect, cold weather when I ran it, but it rained the next day so check the weather.
-Be prepared for a few steep hills near mile 20-21.
-Have warm clothes for afterwards. I was really cold afterwards and it was windy which made it colder.
-If you need to eat right afterwards, have your own eats ready because there isn’t much offered.
It’s Running Tuesday! What are you doing today?

SR, congratulations on meeting your goal. You are an inspiration to me.
Looks like a nice, more quiet race. Beautiful scenery, too!
Love your race reviews…I really want to do the Seattle one. I kind of like smaller races especially if there is awesome scenery. Boring shirt. Remember how you did amazing in Vegas just 2 days ago..you rock!
Taper time! My first marathon is this Saturday! Easy 3 miles today.
Today I taught a 30 minute spin class and then did 2 miles on the treadmill. I will be taking a 30 minute ab class on my lunch break and that will conclude my Running/Activity Tuesday.
Gotta do it up right and brag– 3.1 miles this morning around 6 a.m….did I mention it was 9 degrees, with it feeling like -10 with the wind chill?!?
You go girl – That is too cold for me
Ran a short 4 mile run before work
After work its hot yoga Tuesday :O)
Legs feel ok 2 days after what was a fast half marathon (for me). Quads (sore) and body (just tired) yesterday so i took a full day off from any physical exertion. Did the trick.
I have friends in town this weekend, so I had to move my Saturday 7 miler to tonight. On the dreadmill because the sun has already gone down by the time I get home, and I watch too many CSI/Criminal Minds episodes to run in the dark!
I’m a new runner so I’m working my way through the Couch-to-5K plan (I’m on Week 6 Day 1) so today so I ended up doing 2 miles in about 30 minutes. I’m definitely not very fast but since fitness is my main goal for the moment, I’m proud of myself for sticking with the program.
Great report!
5 miles run for me tonight, on the dreadmill. 4 of those miles will be speedwork. I wish I could run outside since my bf got me the new garmin forerunner 310 which is amazing!!!
i want more vegas pics
i did a check up run today that went well. i’m incredibly sore (like heeeeeeeeeeeeeeello quads) but nothing is hurt. good.
and thanks for the comment on my blog. you are too nice and it made me smile because i look up to you so much
— is that too cheesy to say? hahah
Awesome race reviews!
UHM
If I can then I guess I will be running on the treadmill! But I am really sore from weights and weight machines, so we will see!
5 miles a 6am…indoors though cause im a wuss
2.5 miles on treadmill – hoping warms up in the morning would love to run outside. I’ve heard to stick to the 1/2 in Vegas
Ew. Was the timing chip one of those neoprene bands? Those are sooo 1990. They had those in one of my marathons this year too and the next day it felt like I had worn an 8lb weight on that ankle.
Too snowy for a run, plus its a rest day. Spin class and weights this afternoon!
1st workout of the 2nd week of Couch to 5K, got up at 5:15 before the babies were up and it was FANTASTIC! 19 degrees here in Cookeville, TN so I used the treadmill.
The Seattle course definitely has beautiful scenery. The run along Lake WA Blvd is the best with the clear water, green trees and views of the snow capped mountains (if its a clear day). Congrats again on the great race!
My workout last night was 1 hour of yoga from a DVD by my triahtlete friend “Flexible Warrior: Yoga for Athletes”. Nothing fruity about that yoga session, it made me sweat and my legs were shaking like crazy!
The neoprene ankle bracelet chip is used in triathlons, maybe they were expecting flooding rains! It is Seattle!
LOVE smaller marathons. The big ones are fun and all, but its nice not to get lost in the crowd once in awhile.
Brisk 5 miler during my lunch break, 30 degrees and bit gusty. Felt good though to be out during daylight hours running!
running…running…yada yada…how bout some more would you rather or celebricizing or yoga bashing??
Running Tuesday will have to wait until next week… post-first-marathon soreness still… giving myself through Wednesday, but I WILL be back on the horse by Thursday.
5 miles tonight and core work! Woohoo!
I had to use an ankle time chip for a race in London. It felt so weird to put it on my ankle and then take it off at the finish line. I totally felt like I was wearing an alcohol ankle monitor! haha
A little irrelevant, but can I just comment on how much I love that you’re always cruising by a bunch of macho looking guys in your race pictures. HA!
I ran 8 miles (for the very first time) this morning! I am training for my first half marathon (RNR New Orleans) in February! Let me know if you see any discounts online!
try this one for $10 off: 10RNRDEN or MGMB. either hopefully should work.
I ran 10 this morning! I get marathon fever everytime I read one of your reports.
Congrats on RnR Vegas! You really inspire me to push myself to achieve my running goals!
Oh, and for Running Tuesday–10 miles this afternoon!
I did weights (legs) and 30 minutes on the Stairmaster.
I would love to run Seattle someday, especially since Shane is from there. I wish it got cold here. It’s been getting in the high 70′s late at night, and it feels downright chilly.
I’m moving to the Seattle area in the summer, and after reading your review, I think I will be signing up for the half!
