Dana Point Turkey Trot Race REVIEW

by SkinnyRunner on November 29, 2010

Every year Dana Point, CA, has a turkey trot 5k and 10k race on Thanksgiving Day which benefits a local food bank.  This year over 12,000 trotters ran the races!

Early registration for the 10k is $35 going up to $45 and for both the 10k and 5k is $50 going up to $55.

The race expo was held on Wednesday in the harbor; the weather was beautiful, free parking, what more could you ask for?  Well, maybe a better expo.  It was small, not a whole lot going on, but again, this is a small town, little race that’s gotten much bigger over the years.

As far as the race itself, I think you probably need to get there early to get a good parking spot.  The 10k started right on time and ran through Dana Point Harbor along the water which is very beautiful; the scenic course, views and weather really make this a great event.

I ran this race two years ago and it was raining; this year it was really cold at the start, around high 30’s, but it warms up as the sun comes up.

The start is a little crowded and tough to get in the corrals so you probably want to hop in a corral early.

After the race they had bagels, muffins maybe, bananas, and water, kinda the standards, but I didn’t see any race medals?  There was also a post race expo across the street, but I didn’t go to it.

Overall, this is a really fun, small town race.  People get dressed up and enjoy the morning, beautiful scenery and the fact that it’s Thanksgiving.

Although I don’t like 10k races, I though this was a great race: well managed and well put together.  I’d definitely recommend anyone in the area to run this race!  As a turkey maybe…

Love that “easy running” feeling. I hope it will show up my next race on sunday ;)
By the way, I apologize in advance for my very awkward question but I was wondering, do you wash your hair, and re apply makeup after every run? (not races, just everyday run) ….

How come you don’t like 10ks? I’m running my first race in 2 weeks, and it’s a 10k! Should I be worried?

So funny…I took a picture of that same girl wearing a turkey costume.

Her and her friend got tangled around 5 mile turn, it was really funny and they were good sport about it. I still need to do my recap, but feeling lazy…I’m still Turkey coma :(
