Dana Point Turkey Trot 10k Race Recap

by SkinnyRunner on November 25, 2010

WORKOUT – Ran (total) 13.1 miles/1:40 mins

10k race/44:11 official

Let me just say that I hate running 10k’s because you have to run too dang fast.  Give me a half or a full any day.  I just can’t keep up with those speedy 10kers.

The last 10k I ran was the Newport Beach Spirit 10k in March 2009.  I ran it with  good friend Nina; it was her first 10k ever and we finished in 58:19.

So it’s been a year and a half since I’ve ran a 10k and I wanted to keep that streak going, but the Dana Point Turkey Trot’s practically in my backyard and I love running in that area so I signed up.  Plus, I figured I’d run more miles to justify my slow time.

This morning was cold, like way too cold for wimpy Californians like me.

I wore tights and long sleeves but ended up being way too warm.

I didn’t bring my camera with me because I knew I’d barely be able to breathe for 6 fast miles let alone take pictures.

I got there around 6:30am for a 7am start and purposely parked far away so I could run a little as a warm up.  And I wanted to get in those extra miles; that was my main goal for the day.

I ran to the start (1.3 miles/11 mins) and just jumped into the corral not paying attention to where I was.

Had a chocolate Heart Thrive around 6:30am.  Chocolate may be my fav flav.

The problem with not running short races, besides the whole dying thing, is pacing.  How the heck do I pace myself for such a short race?

So I start and am way too far back.  Nice move, SR.  For the first mile I’m weaving so much I ended up with a basket.  But then I got into a groove and went at it.  The first 5 miles felt really easy and then suddenly, I was dying.  like the race couldn’t end fast enough. like I thought I’d throw up.

I finished in 44:11, 7:07 pace.  302 out of 4005, 53rd woman out of 2209, 11th in my age division out of 378.

I was hoping to have the average pace be sub 7 minutes, but I’m also hoping for a unicorn and rainbow.

008

After the race, I kept going, and with the 10k, did 11.8 miles/1:29 so the total for the day was 13.1 miles/1:40 mins.  Yes!  I can eat more now!!

I ran this race 2 years ago in 50:19 so I suppose that’s improvement.

I’ve got to go practice my dance moves in case my second career as a Radio City Rockette ever pans out.

*I was informed by a reader that I wasn’t 1st or 2nd in the Fishbowl Half last weekend or even close to it; I didn’t see anyone in front of us during the multiple loops so I wrongly assumed the other guy and I were in the front.  I rescind all claims of awesomeness on my part.  just this once.

And I’ll double check official results for this race so I’m not a liar anymore.

Happy Thanksgiving!

happy turkey day! I so wish I could run outside right now so I could justify all the food I’m gonna eat tonight, but it is 25 degrees and snowing here in Bham…

They probably accidentally gave 1st place to someone that was actually a slow 10ker at the fishbowl. I think that’s what you should tell yourself.

you’re so fast, you make me sick. in a good way.

Glad you saw the results were up. I was stalking the results because two of my friends ran it today. Happy thanksgiving!

I understand completely! I ran my 10k in 44:17 actually and I would rather longer races anyday. I hate that cross country races are 5ks which are even worse. I also hate tumbling over people in 5/10ks, there just isn’t enough room ha.

I’d definitely say that 50 min -> 44min is a big improvement. I did think it was funny that you wore about the same thing to your 10k as I did to mine, and it’s below freezing here.

That was you that passed me around mile 5! I was that guy in the orange WorldVision singlet. I sped up to see if it was you, but in doing so I gave myself a side stitch. :)
Good job on your race! Hope you have a happy thanksgiving!

I’d lurve to have your 10k time! I absolutely agree about short races, though. I ran a marathon a week and a half ago and now this?! We were at the finish before I warmed up! Happy Thanksgiving – hope your cheesecake was the bomb.

Saw you at the race and yelled out your name but you had your headphones on…..you were running crossing the pedestrian lane, after this reading this post, now I know why.

I took a lot of pictures, it was a lot of fun.
