Vegas and the Fishbowl Half Marathon Race REVIEW

by SkinnyRunner on November 23, 2010

Ummm, some of you guys are freaks with your pro athlete love picks…  Polamalu?!  I do like those Head and Shoulder commercials of his.  Gotta love a man with a sense of humor… and luscious, flowing locks.

And Court made out with Tom Brady, pre-Gisele?!?!  yowzers.

First things first, Vegas is in less than 2 weeks.

I just had my shirt made and hot dang, it’s cute.  I mean, obviously because it has my picture on it, but super hot dang, it’s so much cuter than any shirt I could make.  Thanks to Jaymee for the design.

Vegas Group Run

Saturday morning December 4th.  That’s about all the details I know.

I don’t know if there’s anywhere else to run besides the Strip, so if we run that, we will probably have to do it relatively early… unless you want to run 1 block at at a time and wait at every stoplight.  Anyone have any ideas??

~~~~~~~~~~
On to the race review
The Fishbowl Marathon, half marathon, 1ok and 5k was on November 20th in Fountain Valley, CA, at Mile Square Park.  For the half, it only $40, which I believe is a tax write off since all the money goes to Caring SHOS (Students Helping Other Students).
031
There was maybe 100-150 people running all the events.
024
To make it perfectly clear, this race was organized all by volunteers, and it was the first race they’d put on.  There weren’t any race companies helping out; it was more like a grassroots race.
But the volunteers did a great job.  It was crappy weather, and they were out manning water stations and even had Gatorade.
023
All the races, including the full marathon, are all within the park which is great for race planning (no need to get roads closed, as many city permits, etc) but with all the different distances going on and multiple loops, the course got a little confusing.
During any mile, you’d see tons of arrow signs and number signs in different colors, and some people did get lost.  I got pretty confused as to where the finish line was.  Sounds dumb but I was bewildered.
026
But for what the race is, I feel like the volunteers tried their best to make it the best event they could.  There’s definitely some glitches and things that need to be smoothed out in the future, but it’s a good start for a very small race.
035
There was medals and bottles of Powerade Zero (yes, I love Zero!) afterwards and we even got t shirts in our race packets:
014
On the plus side, there was tons of free parking right in front of the park, and the park itself is very pretty to run through.
If you’re interested in a very small, homegrown-feel event that won’t break the bank, maybe check it out next year.
Hello SR, the shirt is really cute! :) In regards to our run in Vegas, I agree that it needs to be early. I was thinking 7a.m.-7:30?? I looked at the course map and I think a good meeting place would be in front of the MGM. We could run 2 miles down, 2 miles back. Whaddyu think? I’ll be staying at the Luxor… YEAAAA…move over Elvis…SR and the crew are comin’ into town!!
Love the design on that shirt! With my face I would never dare to put it on a shirt (would scare other runners off), but it works for you. ;) :)
Great shirt for RnR Las Vegas! That was my favorite of the bunch.
Random question for a first comment…are you a lefty? It looks like your Garmin is on your right arm. Either that or your camera is playing Jedi mind tricks.
Anyway, love your blog. It makes me LOL at work inappropriately almost every day.
I kind of wish I hadn’t found your blog because now you’ve got me signing up left and right for local halfs when I am supposed to be taking it easy and strengthening my knee. ;)
