Serious stuff, shoes, and smartcars

by SkinnyRunner on November 10, 2010

I think I’m going to take today as a rest day, mostly because I’m cold and don’t want to get out from underneath my Snuggie.

This picture was from last year but this is what I look like right now… minus the pina colada.

Yesterday was also a rest day, and I really need to get some miles in to reach my 2000 mile goal, but I guess I’ll get a few more in this weekend running the Malibu Marathon.

A couple things before we get to the great t shirt vote in the next post, otherwise known as THE VOTE.

Reader Marianne sent this to me a couple days ago and I think it’s very important and worth posting,

This morning a friend that I see at all the local races in my town was hit and killed while running before sunrise.  I don’t know the details of the accident yet but was hoping you could send out a reminder to all the runners to wear reflective gear and bright lights if running in the dark.

And to remind all drivers to pay attention!!  I know I am guilty of not paying enough attention while driving.  So next time a runner thinks do I really need my reflective gear and blinky light the sun will be up in 30 minutes, the answer if YES!  Cuz it only takes a second for everything to change!

Thank you, Marianne, for this serious and sad reminder that we all need to be vigilant as both runners and drivers.

Road Runner Sports has pages of reflective and safety gear, from snap bands to vests to headlights.

A couple things I love: saving money on races (who wants to pay full price?!) and helping someone else out.  Just because your shoes have 500 miles on them doesn’t mean someone less fortunate could also get some great use out of them.

So if you’re in the area, check it out on November 18th.  You can donate your old shoes, get fitted for new ones, save money on new ones and get discounted race registration.   That’s a quadruple threat!

I don’t own a snuggie, but I want to be doing what you’re doing in that pic right now. I’m at work (shhh!) but would much rather be wrapped up on my laptop on my couch. lucky.

That is so sad and such an important reminder. My husband and I were just having a discussion about that the other day. (I judge people I see not wearing reflective gear when it’s not very light out.) We both have the Brooks NightLife hat, as does my dad, and I love it. We also wear the Amphipod Xinglet with a front and back flasher (Hood to Coast requirement) – it’s a great option if you don’t like the extra layers or vests get in your way. Please, just be safe and if you aren’t sure – go the route of safety. It really is hard to see you, even if you’re wearing a white hat/shirt.

This sort of thing has been happening A LOT here in Houston lately. Some the runners could have been more careful, but mostly the drivers. QUIT.EFFIN.TEXTING.TALKING.ON.THE.PHONE.DRIVING.

I live in a part of houston that is FILLED with bikers and runners all over the dang place. I am a runner. I am a driver. therefore i know how it feels to have a driver never look as they slide through the stop sign or whatever. that makes me more cautious as a runner AND a driver. because even some in my group will dart out and say HURRY! YOU CAN MAKE IT..

um. squish. no thank you.

during the week i start my runs at 5am and while its lit by street lamps and whatnot my little self is hard to see…i wear my blinky light on teh back of my shorts and my head lamp (much like the Fuel Belt one u have shown) no matter what.

AND my Road ID.

Just in case i do get squished.

GREAT MESSAGE!

I’ve seen a smart car TWICE in my entire life, not counting the 8 million sitting at the dealership lol. Are they more popular in the states? I personally could never drive one, I’d be terrifed of being squashed! But then again, I’m surrounded by giant trucks.

On another note, your snuggie is so stylish! Mines blue and hideous .. barf.

Oh I was so gonna run the Malibu half but I just moved about 80 miles further south then I used to be and I don’t feel like driving up to LA twice (once for packet pickup, once to run)! Have fun, it looks like a nice course!

Yep. All the NYU safety officers drive those cars. Glad to know my $50,000 of tuition is going to a really good cause.

I am sad to report that the Dean of Math and Science here at Auburn University was killed last week while running and attempting to cross a 4 lane road. Her friend was also gravely injured. It is very concerning in a small community where THOUSANDS of people walk to school or work and use the roads for exercise. Please be careful!!!

That is such a great idea-donating old shoes. I have three of four pairs that just sit in my closet untouched in months.

I love my snuggie-once I get under there is no coming back.

I carry a small torch when I run in the dark, although my brother yells at me though because apparently I swing it around too much and shine it at cars, opps. I hate having to carry it, but, its makes it safer for me to run.

While I think the torch is a fantastic idea (I bet the Vikings carried torches on their training runs!), what exactly are you meaning? What kind of torch is it? I am having a great time picturing you running with a huge flaming torch…AND swining it around at other cars!!!

torch is another word for flashlight…. I know, it always cracks me up to hear it too. :)
