HB Distance Derby 10 miler race recap + review

by SkinnyRunner on October 23, 2010

WORKOUT – race 10 miles/1:15:51  + 3.25 miles/28 mins

(Didn’t bring my camera so this is gonna be short)

RACE RECAP

This morning I ran the Huntington Beach Distance Derby 10 mile race.

untitled

Wake up was at 5am; I was tired and wanting to go back to sleep.  (I’ve been sleeping weird lately and getting up very early, 4:30am yesterday so this morning I was pretty beat, like more haggard than usual)

I thought about blowing off the race and going back to bed, but I got up, had coffee and stretched.  I left the house at 6am and for the second time in an hour, thought about throwing in the towel when it starting raining lightly on the drive to HB.

I parked by 6:40am, grabbed my bib, went to the bathroom and by then it was time to start.

The course is a flat bike path along the beach, 2.5 miles out and back south and the same going north.

If it were sunny…

My goal was to run about 7:45 miles and if I ran anything with 8’s, I’d gouge my eyes out with someone’s running spike.

The race started and surprisingly for once, I got right into a good pace, around 7:40, instead of starting out way too fast.  And then I pretty much ran that for the rest of the race.

I felt really good for the whole race (unlike last year!) so I probably should have ran faster and been even more aggressive in my pacing.

I finished in 1:15:51, 7:35 min/mile pace.  I was 50th place overall, 10th woman, and 3rd in my age division.

005

I cooled down and ran a slower 3.25 miles/28 mins to get a half distance in for the day.

RACE REVIEW

I’m not going to review the race again since you can find my original review HERE, but I’ll add a couple things that were new this year, the 56th year for the race, the oldest road race in Orange County:

-chip timing

-better swag

008

Last year we got a cotton t shirt and water bottle so the backpack bag was an upgrade even though the shirts were cotton again.

-better finish line snacks

There was water, Activate energy drink, lots of bananas, apples, oranges, Trader Joe’s trail mix and cereal bars, and a few other things I think.

The only thing that was worse this year was the weather… slightly raining and wet.

A fun, small, cheap ($25) race.  The end.

*Something else worthy of a running spike to the eye?  “blends”.  over it. already.

Congrats on a great race! What a pretty place to run. And I’m so with you on the “blends” thing. I throw up in my mouth a little every time I read it.

haha so annoyed with “blends” as well. you are like the anti-blogger blogger and i love every minute of it. you are real and you don’t get into the dumb trends that every.single.other.blogger.and.their.mother get in on. stay cool.(and i’ll stay retarded for actually just saying stay cool….)

What is the “blends” thing? More proof that I am not a good blogger b/c I have no idea what you are all talking about.

I saw you finishing today – gave you a little cheer! And then this other dude I was talking to for a while (who has run 86 marathons – crazy friendly asian guy) heard me call your name and cheered for you too. I got a good chuckle out of that one.

The 5 mile was so much less competitive, it was almost comical. I was the 7th woman (1st in 30-34) and my pace for 5 was slower than yours for 10.

Ha! I HATE “blends” as well. So totally corny; I absolutely cringe whenever I read it and then again when it is defined, often in the same sentence. Blech.

Love your blog though. You’re hilarious.

Don’t know why some bloggers have the need to combine words together to sound cute…what’s the word I’m looking for…oh yeah “bl-end”. Gag!

Great race! You inspire me with your speediness too.

Blends makes me crazy too. If I have a friend who is a blogger, they are a friend. Who coined that dumb term?

From these comments I’m guessing that “blends” is what bloggers call their blogger friends??
