Hey Cribs, look at my fridge!

by SkinnyRunner on August 19, 2010

Since I’m leaving on Tuesday to fly to Alaska for about 2-3 weeks, I’m determined to enjoy each day and do something, not just sit around wondering why Snooki is famous.

Yesterday I took Marni to a new, huge park.

I run by here all the time but never bring the little midget fox.

I brought a couple magazines and enjoyed the nearly *90 weather.

Marni did some wind sprints until she got way too hot and begged for Yogurtland.  I said, sure, I’ll get some for me.

I’m not loving their new monthly flavor whatever it is, maybe Cookies and Cream?  So I went with the cult classic pistachio, peanut butter and chocolate coconut truffle.

And then I went grocery shopping… at 3 different stores: Trader Joe’s, a local fruit/vegetable market next door to TJ’s, and Stater Bros, the cheap Mexican grocery store.  Some of you love grocery shopping so much, you want to get married there.  and honeymoon in aisle 7.

Not me.  I’d like to shop about once a year if I could.  But at least now our fridge has some food in it:

I think what bugs me about grocery shopping is that you can’t go to one store and get everything and especially not at the cheapest price.  You have to shop around for the best deals.  I just want one megastore that sells everything under the sun for the cheapest price.  Um yeah, I think they have that… it’s called Walmart.  Ok, nevermind.  I take that all back.

Question of the day: How much do you spend on groceries for you or your household?  Do you shop around for the cheapest deals or just hit up your favorite spot?  Do you coupon cut or no?

I LOVE grocery shopping. Like, way too much. I generally hit up 2 or 3 stores each week in order to get everything that I need.

I used to be a coupon maven (even started/have my own business making coupon organizational systems), but I don’t do a ton of coupon cutting these days since I buy mostly organic. I use all of the coupons I can for organic items and also for health and beauty stuff though! I haven’t bought razors in over 2 years because I got a great deal and bought a butt ton of them at one time.

I love grocery shopping because I like picking up new things and thinking about new recipes to make. I don’t enjoy the paying part though. I tend to only go to one store (Giant, a common supermarket in the DC area) and I almost always forget my coupons (plus, I try not to buy processed foods very often and the majority of coupons are for those types of food). I don’t shop around for good deals because it takes too much time. I’m afraid of Trader Joe’s because I find WAY too many interesting things there and spend WAY too much money. My weekly shopping bill is about $150-$200 (last week I spent $192) but we have four adults in our house (my sis, her hubs, my hubs, and me) and a baby – so we’re feeding a lot. Plus, I buy a lot of organic produce so end up spending close to $80 on fresh fruits and veggies….

Love the Bubbles! :)

I do not shop around, but do look at the price tags in the grocery store. Most of the time they have different brands on the same kind of pasta (for example); I just pick the cheapest one.

And yep, I do coupon cut…bit ashamed to admit that, but what the heck. ;) I’m Dutch; we’re supposed to be cheap!

I WAS going to Wegmans AND Trader Joe’s EACH week but then realized I was spending tooo much money – especially b/c of all the novelty items at Trader Joe’s.

So now I only go to Wegmans, generally once a week and then supplement with a few items at Trader Joe’s (we get the cat food and cheap wine/beer there).

I dont clip coupons b/c I generally dont buy things that the coupons are for. I do TRY to shop the sales at Wegmans, but wegmans is cheap enough as it is :)

i’ve been spending about $80-115/week at Wegmans, these past two weeks I’ve gone over the $100 mark. yikes. its just my husband and I and he eats most meals at work. blargh!!

for bulk items like TP, maple syrup, etc – we just ask my mother in law for those items and she never has us reimburse her :) we try not to ask too often :) but she does go to costco alot in a month….

don’t like grocery shopping…wish it would all come to me in some miraculous way. i go to our store here called H.E.B. it’s a state chain and they have their own brands too. their prices are great and they have a spin off called Central Market which carry all the super healthy foods.

i do love coupons too. every sunday, i get the paper and go through the coupons. i don’t do the save on two items thing ( like the cereal coupons usually have ). i only clip the coupons for the items i buy…

I try and stay around $70 a week at the grocery store because I know inevitably we’ll made mid-week trips and spend around $30. So I’d say $100 a week.

I try and get the best deals possible. I bring register receipt coupons (Safeway) back with me if it’s something good.

I’m a bargain hunter, baby!

I do the several grocery store thing– usually spread over different weeks. I go to Woodman’s (sort of the warehouse store) for staples about every 10 days or so. I supplement that with TJ’s for fresher stuff or when the fancy to cook actually strikes me. I belong to Costco too, but I try to only go there on a rare occassion. Since everything from there is ginormous, it takes a single person like a year to eat the purchases :P

I love grocery shopping! I only go to one store at time. Def. cut coupons. It turns into a game to see how much I can save each week! Normally I spend b/t $60-$80 but since being pregnant, I spend a lot less.
Wishing we had a TJ’s closer to us. We make it a girls trip to go to TJ’s and go out to lunch!

I used to love grocery shopping, but now that I have a 7 week old baby it worries me to take her to the grocery store just incase she has a complete baby meltdown. I try to get in and out as quickly as possible. We spend just under $100 a week and shop at one store.

What about you? How much do you spend a week in your house?

Reply

erin August 19, 2010 at 7:01 am

I go once every 8-10 days and can get by on about $70-$80 a pop, which includes getting lots of veggies and fish. I just buy lots of whats on sale and freeze if it necessary. I also clip coupons like a nut.

Marg August 19, 2010 at 7:03 am

I hate grocery shopping, probably because I’m never good at planning menus for a full week. It’s about $80 – $100 a week for 2 of us for just dinners and a few lunches for me.

I should look into coupons though, at the Kroger here you can load them onto your preferred shopper card through shortcuts online. I’m totally gonna hit up one of those triple coupon days!

I think we spend waaay to much on groceries but I will say that we eat high quality food. We are very picky.
And I should add that my average grocery trip (which takes place more than twice a week) lasts at least 1 hour because I have to visit three different stores, too!

I love grocery shopping. Not many coupons because I don’t eat a lot of the stuff they have coupons for.

Hunni and I average about $75 every two weeks for us. But we stock up on major sales like beans this week at Stop and SHop.

Well, since you asked, and since I love to menu plan, cut coupons and grocery shop as a hobby…I’m going to tell you.

We have a ‘discount grocery’ that offers damaged & out-of-date products. I hit it up first and get everything I can off my list. Saves me 50-75%/month! Whatever is left is bought at our neighborhood grocery. I could do WalMart, but everytime I walk in I meet up with a client & it becomes a billable hour. Which could be cost effective if I actually charged them.
I digress – we spend $500-$600/month on groceries for a family of 4. But we rarely eat out.
Will miss you.

i think we spend about $400/mo on groceries. we have a big freezer full of cow which helps a little. def hit up costco for all meat – chicken/fish. and produce. but dang i hate going to costco. i used to think walmart was the key to low cost but since they don’t have the same grocery store club deals i don’t feel like i save money. i do coupon cut – but only for toiletries and random things like butter and yogurt. there aren’t coupons for the majority of things i buy – veggies and fruit.
i hate it too tho. and i never do more than one store in a day. that makes me cranky. i go btwn tj’s and safeway.

I clip coupons when I get them, but I also dont run from store to store bargain shopping either

My fiance & I probably spend around $100 a week on groceries… sometimes a little less. We do one main shopping trip to Meijer (which is waaaay better then Walmart- I refuse to go to Walmart, ever) every week. Then I tend to stop by either trader joe’s or whole foods on my way home from work once or twice a week for little extras that we can only get there or for fish or wine :)

Reply

Kimberly August 19, 2010 at 7:36 am

I would like to go to one store a week but sometimes I hit up Meijer and Kroger if one of them doesn’t have enough good stuff on sale. I do prefer Kroger because they triple coupons, and I use as many coupons as I can.

For my husband and I, we spend about $100 a week. We’d like it to be less but we eat in a lot.

We’ve cut our grocery bill in half by only grocery shopping once per week and looking for deals. We usually go to a produce market and then Safeway and it’s on average $70/week.

Reply

Juli D. August 19, 2010 at 7:45 am

We average $60 a week (well, that includes groceries and toiletries, cleaning supplies, etc.). I do not coupon clip and we are part of a CSA in the summer for our veggies. I go to one store usually and we only eat out maybe once a week so I work hard to make meals based on what’s on sale at the store that week.

Laura August 19, 2010 at 7:50 am

Holy crap, do we spend a lot on groceries. I go to Trader joes for most stuff, i like that it’s small and I know where everything is – so I can get in and out quickly. But they don’t have everything, so I end up going to other stores also. I got to whole foods sometimes and sometimes stop n shop.

I think probably for two adults, about $150 per week. Maybe more. But I buy a lot of fruits/vegetables (very $$) and I like to buy cage free eggs, “all natural” meat etc. So it adds up quickly. Plus my hubby eats huge amounts of food. Sigh.

That yogurt looks delicious!

Tracy August 19, 2010 at 7:54 am

I don’t like grocery shopping at all. I always walk in with a list, and usually stick by it unless my husband is with me. I do often shop at a few different places because of prices, quality (fresh goods), and specialty items. I typically spend between $65-85 but it really all depends on what I’m getting. If I’m picking up more fruit, veggies, and proteins the check with be significantly higher.

I love grocery shopping. I am totes one of those people who would get married in aisle 7… :D

I love grocery shopping, but only if I have made a list and I go by myself — No husband or kids so I can get a little “me” time. I usually go once week. I try to always plan my dinners for the week and buy what ingredients I will need. I have never been one of those people who can open their cabinet and whip up a meal. I always end up missing an ingredient–hence the list.

We do spend quite a bit. It’s a least $150 per week. However, I only go to one store and I don’t use coupons. If I have them, I will inevitably forget to bring them. I do try to buy organic fruit, veggies, and meat, so that ups the bill.

I HATE grocery shopping. Three or four years ago my husband became our family shopper. I plan the menus and make the list and every Sunday morning he does the shopping. We shop at WinCo. (Employee Owned/Great Prices) I don’t use many coupons because we don’t eat most of the processed things that have coupons available. I always use the mission tortilla, Rotel, Scope and toothpaste coupons though!

no coupons for me. they dont have coupons for fresh food :o (

i generally only go to one store for most everything. small local place a block from my house. Fiesta! thats the name of it. its actually a big chain but the one near me has been there FOREVAH and is tiny and everyone is so nice. they also have local produce there a lot of the time.

Only reason I go to Whole Foods is for my pizza crust which i cant find anywhere else.

and then I do go to Kroger sometimes if the list is not very big so i can get fresh kalamata olives and pesto :o )

Okay a couple of questions here . . .

1. Is that park really that big or does having little Marni in the picture fool us into thinking that park is that big! :-)

2. What on earth is the beverage with the dude’s face on it in your fridge, behind the nondairy creamer and your milk??? That just stood out to me for some reason and made me laugh (as well as the already opened bottle of champagne on the door – we so could be friends!). HA

Enjoy your time here . . . the weather has been great!

I love how organized the fridge is – totally reminds me of cribs as the title states!

Girl we shop at walmart and it’s pure unadulterated H-E-DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS! But they really do have the best prices in town AND they will match the competitions coupons if it is for the SAME EXACT item. So that’s good – it’s a pain to do it but it beats driving all over town like you said.

I wish I could do the whole buy once a month – my dad does that but he’s only shopping for himself. My boyfriend and I get bored easy with food so my new diet has sort of put us in a funk (there’s only so much chicken and baked fish you can eat a week). If I could SAM’S CLUB IT UP and know nothing would go to waste I would totally do it.

We shop 2 times a week Wednesday and Friday (my pay day and his) and it works out OK I just wish we could narrow it down to less. Maybe once we’re married when his money becomes my money.. I mean OUR money ;)

Your afternoon looks so enjoyable!!!

I HATE grocery shopping because I ironically always go when everyone in America shops (Sunday Nights). And that’s not true about WalMart, their prices on their crummy produce are usually 2-3times higher than Sprouts (my favorite store). But yes, I have to hit 3, maybe even 4 stores- Costco, WalFart, Sprouts, and sometimes Whole Foods. Usually I spend $60-$100/wk. Gluten-free stuff sometimes gets expensive.

Rachel August 19, 2010 at 9:12 am

My town sucks for grocery shopping. No cool stuff like Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods or even Publix. You have Piggly Wiggly, Walmart, or Food World. Major suck. So, I just go to Walmart and hate myself for it.

i THOUGHT i saved alot at the grocery store until i read some of these comments! GEEZ! i probably spend about $400-$450 a month at the store. that is to feed a big 6′ 3″ man, a rapidly growing 9 year old, me, and a 1 year old.
what usually happens is i will clip the coupons, organize them, and get to the store only to remember the coupon book is at home. then i race down each isle in a hurry and throw stuff in the cart! :)

Totally depends on the time of day I go shopping. I usually only hit up Walmart to get everything done in one stop. I usually spend anywhere from $85 to $125 per week.

We just got a new Publix opened right down the road from where I live and this weekend I’m shopping there and going to see where I save more. Walmart vs. Publix, it’s on this weekend baby!!!!

I don’t necessarily love grocery shopping, but I do love cooking! :) So, I go shopping every Sunday afternoon for the entire week. I usually spend $100-$130 a week! I don’t shop around for the best deals, I just go to one grocery store. But, I will look as I am making the grocery list to see what is on sale that week at that store. It’s probably too much to spend on groceries, but we have good, healthy meals at home. It’d be way more expensive to run out of food b/c then we’d eat out even more.

Reply

Jen August 19, 2010 at 9:55 am

We spend way too much on groceries. I’d say we spend $400-$600 on food a month for my husband, 2 year old and I. We buy better quality food and I think it’s worth it. We also live in So CA, so everything is expensive.

I shop at like a million different stores just to get what we need/like. Walmart, Costco, Trader Joes, Henrys, Whole Foods, Fresh and Easy, Albertsons…

I don’t coupon clip because we usually don’t eat any of that stuff anyway.

We are CHEAP when it comes to groceries…but I promise we don’t eat rice and beans only :) I’ve learned what to buy where and it helps a ton. Also, I try to meal plan and not let anything we buy go to waste. We spend less than $200/month on groceries….I like to use that extra money to save for vacations instead ;)

I despise grocery shopping; I go to one store and that’s it, I don’t really care if the lettuce is .35 cents cheaper or the ziplocks are on sale somewhere else, to me it’s worth the extra money to just be done with it. That being said, I do buy a lot of my staples like noodles, pasta, sauces, cleaning supplies, tupperware, etc at Costco, the huge box store so I usually just go grocery shopping for meat and veggies/fruits. I can’t believe how many people will stand like directly in the middle of an isle contemplating what kind of Pasta sauce fits there lifestyle, you’ll be like trying to get by and they are just sitting there staring into space! Drives me batty. I love your fridge by the way, I have a side by side and I HATE IT, but it’s like 3 years old? Came with our house when we bought it so I can’t exactly rationalize buying a new one.

Ugh. I never want to go, but I get myself something special every week that makes up for it, whether a snack or ingredients for a new recipe…totally makes it worthwhile. I think we spend $100-$175 per week for the two of us. We only go to one store.

When we lived in California, we used to order online and have it delivered. Ah, those were the days…

You don’t want to know how much I spend on food… It’s ridiculous… Let’s just say if I died they will name the nut butters aisle after me. Then they’ll sprinkle my ashes in front of the hummus section. I like to coupon it up or email companies.. There I said it!

250.00-300.00 a week. I have 2 sons and a hubby….and me….I love food!! But seriously I am a savvy shopper and stock up, and try to be bargain conscious, but it is what it it…. lots of money for food.

Yikes.

I’m a solo bird, living in Portland, OR. Fred Meyer is closest, followed by Safeway and TJ’s. I’ve switched to carless this year, so that means I mostly hit up Freddies. (As a NW girl, I know you feel me.)

I average $80/week on groceries (including household stuff, various toiletries, and pet care. Why is moisturizer $10 every two months? That shizz adds up!)

I also eat out a lot. :X Like 3-5 times per week a lot.

We spend $75-$100 a week on groceries – for 3 people. It depends on if we have to stock up on staples like nut butters, coffee, olive oil and vinegar. I shop at 3 stores to get the best deals and actually like hunting down healthy food on a budget. I rarely clip coupons unless it is a killer deal or something we actually use. I find coupons are usually for highly processed stuff that we don’t buy.
