Hawaii 5-0

by SkinnyRunner on August 18, 2010

WORKOUT – Ran outside 9.0 miles/1:14

You know the runs that are just difficult for some reason?  Yeah, that was this one.  I don’t even know why, but it took 5 miles before I got in the groove.  Sometimes the best part of a run is being done with it.

So I said last post I had some major googling to do.  And I googled my little heart out to no avail.  It was just decided last night that in February we are going here:

For the past couple years, my parents have taken us all on a family vacation over Super Bowl Sunday week.  Three years ago we went to Maui, then Big Sky Montana to snowboard, and last year we went to Sun Valley, Idaho so it’s a warm weather vacay this time.

We’re staying here:

So what I should be doing is googling affordable plane tickets, but instead I’m desperately searching high and low for a Hawaii race… but no luck Chuck.

There’s actually a few different Hawaii marathons on different islands throughout the year, but none coincide with the time we’ll be there.  Ohs wells.

For those of you who’ve been to Hawaii, what’s your favorite island, town, hotel, restaurant, beach?  Any Hawaiian favorites??

*I’ve got something to show you guys next post.  It just arrived and I’m all stoked on it.

I live on Maui but Maui Marathon is not as good as it used to be years ago when it was in Feb.
Perfect weather to train in and the whales were here at that time but now it’s in Sept. WAY too hot.
Hmmmm favorite places …. I like the local food. Da Kitchen rates high on that scale. Paia is a fun town. Letarte swim and resort wear a must to go to in Paia. Mama’s Fish House …. YUM!

aw! you guys are going to my former home…the big island. if you guys decide to be non touristy and head over to the Hilo side be sure to check out the shave ice (snow cone for you mainland people) store on the waterfront. Also on the hilo side there are some hot spring baths near the waterfall. and if theres snow you can also check out the top of mauna kea, where in the same day you can have a snowball fight and sandball fight! nowhere else but hawaii! also…..check out Big Island Candies for their famous chocolate dipped shortbread cookies….ok last one, if you do go to hilo, go to Ken’s House of Pancakes.

ok just take me with you please :) obviously im impartial to the hilo side since Hilo is more of a locals only kind of place and well kona is more touristy.

I love Kona!!! My husband and I honeymooned there, and it is amazing! Our favorite restaurant was Kona Mix Plate…but I have heard that they closed because of the poor economy. I really hope that is a big fat lie because it was incredible!! I can’t recommend a hotel, we stayed in a friend’s condo for the week. The best beach to “explore” is the black sand beach at the southern end of the island, it’s pretty spectacular. So jealous that you are going!

Sounds like an awesome trip! I’ve been to Kauai and Maui, and I’d say Kauai is my favorite. The weather isn’t always perfect, but it’s really pretty and laid back. Plus, it’s where we got engaged, so that makes it extra special to me.

I’ve never been to Hawaii but would love to go some day! I would love to be able to jet out of an Alaskan winter for some sunshine and warm weather!

I’ve only been to Oahu. North Shore is neat and there’s Motsumotos in Hale’iwa. the shaved ice is fine, but mostly just famous. :)

Hit me up with your Kona questions! We’ve gone the last two winters. The place you are staying looks exactly like the houses by our favorite beach: Kukio Beach.

You have to go to Island Lava Java for Cinnamon Rolls, The Coffee Shack for brunch and the Kona Village Resort Luau.

I have a million other suggestions, so let me know if you need/want them!

I’ve only been to Kaua’i, but we’re already planning on our return. My favorite parts were snorkeling at Tunnels Beach and hiking the Kalalau Trail (even though I wimped out and didn’t make it all the way: http://www.feastsonscraps.com/?p=551 ).

We met a bunch of people trail running the Kalalau, and there were lots of running paths along the coast.

Since the tickets are so cheap right now, I think we might go back to Hawai’i in November, we just need to figure out which island has the best snorkeling that time of year.

This is too funny – I actually just did the same thing yesterday! I’m going to Hawaii for New Years and was googling to find a half marathon to run while I’m there. Maybe if I keep searching I’ll at least find a 10K.

I suggest you get in touch with Bree Wee…professional triathlete from Kona. She’s the resident female “stud” there and can even tell you about all the cool, non-touristy things to see – or just read her blog for ideas! If there is a race – even an unadvertised, unofficial local event, she will know about it. She’s super sweet and approachable!

If you ever make a fabulous luxury getaway to Northeast Ohio, hit me up. I’ve got the lowdown on all the non-contaminated fishin’ holes and where to get the best italian sausage. There are a few super nice 3-star hotels around, too.

I’m sure Hawaii is really nice too, though.

I loved Kona when we went. We actually went for a day down to the Kona Hilton and just cruised around since they have so much funny tourist stuff! We went body boarding a lot too while we were there. Now I’m a little jealous! You’ll have so much fun. Enjoy your googling!

I’ve been to Oahu twice. Each time we stayed in Waikiki, but I LOVE the North Shore. Shrimp trucks, Matsumotos Shave Ice, Beaches…ah.

This year we are going to Maui and I’m thinking about running the Maui half, or at least the 5K.

I’ve been to Kauai and I LOVE it. It’s my favorite place on Earth. When it was time for us to leave I was on the verge of throwing a grown-up temper tantrum right there in the airport, I wanted to stay so bad. I made my hubby promise me that if we win the lottery, he will buy me a house there. I might even let him live there too. : )
You’re gonna have such an amazing time!
