From healthyhollywood.com, here’s an excerpt from Shape magazine of Marisa Tomei’s morning routine:
Marisa begins every day with the same ritual: drinking a cup of hot water with lemon. “I never got into coffee,” she says. “It may take me a little longer to get going than other people, but this just feels really cleansing in the morning.” She follows that with a boiled egg drizzled with a little olive oil or some fresh berries and granola with whole-milk yogurt. “I find that protein wakes up my brain and gets me ready for the rest of my day,” she says. To maintain that “get up and go,” Marisa keeps high protein snacks on hand. “I’m a person who has to eat!” she says. “I graze every few hours.”
I would have a mega 2 year old temper tantrum meltdown without my morning coffee. I don’t care how healthy lemon water is; it would not cut it.
Let’s have a vote: Are you a morning coffee or tea drinker?? Or other?

New reader Katy asked why I can’t run in Alaska…
Super quick back story:
I commercial fish in Alaska in the summers with my family (I’m on a break at home while they fish on the other boat). We are normally gone about a week at a time and then come into port for a day or two. When in port, I don’t have the time, the energy or even the desire to run.
On a similar yet more serious note, The Deadliest Catch marathon was on tv yesterday leading up to Captain Phil’s death and the seaon finale.
And it was so sad. Probably because I can relate with my dad being a captain, my two brothers fishing, and my family dealing with some of the same issues that Phil’s family did. It’s just plain sad to see someone young die and from something preventable.
I’ve said this before, but tell the people around you how much you care for them. Be emphatic about it. It’s really easy to mumble an “I love you” under your breath, but be vulnerable and open and say how you really feel… “You mean the world to me. All I’ve ever wanted to do is make you proud” or whatever needs to be said. Because we are never promised tomorrow.

Enough of that and on to some Cat lady Blogs!
Today’s is another greater reader and commenter on my site (who’s comments always go in the spam folder where I have to retrieve them, I think because of the “sass” looks like a naughty word…), Heather from runningwithsass!
I started my blog in January, (well got serious about it!) It’s a combination of running/health/fitness/my life.
Just kind of a hodgepodge of me. I try to be real, and tell about the ups and downs and things I go through. I think one of the problems with blogging is that a blogger can be idolized if they only show the glamourous parts of life and the good pictures. I try to tell and show the good, bad, and ugly. I have problems just like everyone else, but am committed to being a healthy person, both physically and mentally!
So here’s your TO DO list today: (Am I a taskmaster, or what?!)
1. Go stop by Heather’s blog and leave her a sassy comment; thanks Heather for the email!
2. Tell someone you love them today. And not your dog or Karl Lagerfield.
3. Comment about our Great Coffee vs Tea Debate 2010. Which do you drink? I hope coffee wins!

July 28, 2010 at 6:31 AM
I used to be a major coffee drinker… like 5 cups a day. But, a few years ago I switched to tea. I love that there are so many varieties! I still have coffee every once in a while, but my caffeine tolerance isn’t what it used to be.
July 28, 2010 at 6:33 AM
Hmm I love both tea and coffee, I have to have either one of them when I wake up in the morning. I usually lean towards coffee because I get up early for work, but when I feel pretty well rested I go for the tea, for sure.
I like lattes too!
July 28, 2010 at 6:39 AM
Coffee, coffee, coffee!!
July 28, 2010 at 6:40 AM
Coffee. Two cups before I can leave the house for work. Then I usually have a diet coke (so bad, I know!!) or two. It used to be way worse (like 6-7 a day!).
July 28, 2010 at 6:43 AM
People can get by without coffee in the morning?!?! I’m sipping some right now!
July 28, 2010 at 6:43 AM
i love the to-do list
i’ve never been a coffee drinker. i love the smell but can’t stand the taste. my caffeine comes from diet coke with lime.
July 28, 2010 at 6:44 AM
I used to be a black-tea-with-milk-every-morning-or-else kind of person. But since starting Army ROTC, there’s really that decision: Do I get up half an hour early for tea and letting that digest before running my guts out? Or, do I sleep that little bit longer? Well, I’m sure that’s a no brainer. It kicked my caffeine dependency like none other.
July 28, 2010 at 6:44 AM
Diet Pepsi. I have one every single morning on my way to work.
July 28, 2010 at 6:46 AM
Alright, let’s clear this up. Only celebrities that have someone to cater to their every whim can survive mornings without caffeine. If someone was making my oatmeal and laying out my gym clothes, I might be able to squeak by. But, seriously, real life? I’m sucking down a large iced coffee– and I already had one cup of joe before hitting the road to work!
July 28, 2010 at 6:49 AM
coffee coffee! I actually quit coffee about a year and a half ago but then switched to half caff. It’s just what i need and i avoid the shakes.
You’re absolutely right about telling people that you love them. It’s so important to do.
July 28, 2010 at 6:49 AM
i like my coffee in the morning, but it’s not something i depend on or am addicted to….infact…it doesn’t even wake me up.
July 28, 2010 at 7:00 AM
i read that he died of a Pulmonary Embolism and often these happen after a person has had a stroke. Strokes, however, are not preventable.
July 28, 2010 at 7:51 AM
yes but did you see how much he smoked? he lit one cig with another, 24 hrs a day. he also drank and in his heyday did a butt ton of drugs. add the constant stress of fishing and you dont have a very healthy guy.
July 28, 2010 at 8:32 AM
no, did not read that part…..that lifetstyle is so not good. i will agree with you with the preventable lifestyle he could have led.
have a great day!!!
July 28, 2010 at 9:49 AM
Don’t they all smoke like 700 cigarettes a day?
July 28, 2010 at 10:22 AM
at least. and probably a lot of “homemade” cigs if you catch my drift
July 28, 2010 at 6:51 AM
I have never even tried a cup of coffee. I can’t stand the smell of coffee and I have no desire to drink it. And I’m not a tea drinker either. I don’t really like hot tea. I love iced tea though. My drink of choice is water, water, water!
July 28, 2010 at 6:52 AM
I am a tea drinker and I need that first warm cup to get me going. It’s my morning ritual. I have seen all the deadliest catches and I agree with you about. It’s so sad that he passed away.
July 28, 2010 at 6:53 AM
DEFINITELY coffee. Also, how the heck does ONE EGG keep her satisfied for breakfast???
July 28, 2010 at 6:55 AM
Honestly I drink one large Dunkin Donut Ice Coffee with skim 365 days a yr. Well except Christmas because they are closed or when I am on the west coast because they aren’t there…. I hydrate after a run with it and super charge for my workday. I would rather come in late for work then miss a coffee and I think my coworkers and students would also agree. It may be expensive but I treat myself this way everyday.
July 28, 2010 at 6:56 AM
Coffee. I love to drink coffee though not for the caffiene. I mostly drink decaf. I honestly just like the way it tastes with some lovely creamer. I drink one travel mug size every morning. Then sometimes I drink tea in the afternoon.
July 28, 2010 at 6:57 AM
I have to have atleast my one large cup of coffee everyday!
July 28, 2010 at 6:58 AM
frickin coffee is where it’s at!! If it’s hot out, I use the Starbucks VIA instant brew iced coffee, ice and a lil skim milk and make a coffee smoothie…yummy
July 28, 2010 at 7:00 AM
I never drank coffee until about 2 years ago. I blame it on the Starbucks phenomenon. I started with the occasional latte. Then I got cheap and drank work coffee. Now work coffee sux goat butt and my Italian nona gave me a single serving stove-top espresso maker and also a stove-top pressure frother thing and – vuala! Lattes on the cheap every morning. Drinking it now.
July 28, 2010 at 7:02 AM
I usually go for green tea in the morning, unless it’s a really early one. Then I’m all about the coffee.
July 28, 2010 at 7:06 AM
Coffee 100%
I didn’t start drinking it until I had my son…needed caffine bad!!!
I like Sugar Free Red Bull too!
July 28, 2010 at 7:09 AM
Coffee all the way! I’ve been on bedrest since last week (shoot me now) and have watched The Deadliest Catch marathon 3 times, start to finish. Seeing Phil and his sons, the manliest of men, not be afraid to show their affection for each other before it was too late was amazing. What a gift/lesson to all the fans.
July 28, 2010 at 7:13 AM
Coffee in the morning, 110%. Yes, please. (Obviously, I’ve already finished my first cup)
July 28, 2010 at 7:15 AM
Aw, I didn’t catch the episode but how sad.
On another note, I’m a coffee drinker, although it isn’t necessary for me to function.
July 28, 2010 at 7:15 AM
My boyfriend has been fishing since we started dating and I always make sure to tell him 3 things before they leave for a trip: 1) I love him 2) be safe and 3) catch all the fish in the sea. I used to be able to tell if he was around his other crew guys cause he’d mumble a soft “I love you too,” but recently he has been very open about it and it makes it so much more meaningful. I think he’s realized that its more important to tell me how he feels than appearing to be a hard ass to the crew.
July 28, 2010 at 7:18 AM
hello! I was wondering why I had so many hits on my blog this morning lol!!
Thanks for posting about me. and OOPS about the spam thing. I am so sorry! I actually have a dog named sassy so that’s kinda where it came from!!
July 28, 2010 at 7:24 AM
I always start my workday with coffee. But I can’t do coffee or hot water before runs. Coffee makes me “run” and I’ve tried hot water a few times and it leaves a weird burning in my stomach during runs.
July 28, 2010 at 7:25 AM
DEFINITELY coffee.
July 28, 2010 at 7:31 AM
COFFEEEEEE…. I was finishing my 2nd cup as I read the post!
July 28, 2010 at 7:31 AM
I’m a coffee girl all the way! Tea kinda grosses me out.
July 28, 2010 at 7:33 AM
Ugh, I just wrote a good comment, but my computer crapped out, so it didn’t post.
1 vote for coffee!
July 28, 2010 at 7:37 AM
coffee, coffee, coffee!
July 28, 2010 at 7:46 AM
Haha, Lemon water.. What is this lady.. nuts? I’m an AVID coffee drinker.. There is no denying that..
I really try my best to let everyone know how much I love them.. whenever possible. I know that I want to be told and shown love daily- and I like to extend the sentiment.
July 28, 2010 at 7:48 AM
So true, life can pass by in an instant. Definitely tell someone you love them!
Uh…I’m a sweet TEA drinker…I don’t like hot tea’s much. Coffee churns my stomach, man!
July 28, 2010 at 7:57 AM
Coffee for sure but I also like tea so I guess that makes me ambi-drinkerous? Whatevs. I also watch the Deadliest Catch series and thought Discovery did a very tasteful job of filming about Phil.
July 28, 2010 at 8:03 AM
Coffee!
July 28, 2010 at 8:05 AM
Coffee all the way! There is no way I would function without it. I would throw a temper tantrum as well.
July 28, 2010 at 8:12 AM
COFFEE! All the way…and not just 1 cup, 2 cups. In fact, don’t even talk to me until I’m on cup #2!!!
July 28, 2010 at 8:15 AM
I hate when I hear that celebrities drink hot water with lemon! C’mon, that’s a load of BS in my book. I’ve tried it, tastes like a$$. They are just trying to be so Carrie Bradshaw.
I am a coffee drink although, due to the price tag of coffee shop coffee, and my lack of time in the morning, the past two weeks I have been having tea at work . . . followed shortly after by a Via because I can’t take it any more and want coffee.
This morning called for some home brewed joe because my peanut decided to turn nocturnal on us last night. Ugh.
July 28, 2010 at 8:17 AM
i like coffee but i don’t drink it religiously. i like it more now that we switched to french press coffee…usually just start drinking my water in the morning tho. i also really like loose tea – cost plus has this wonderful rainforest black tea that has little bits of mango in it.
so i like coffee and tea.
July 28, 2010 at 8:25 AM
Coffee!!!! I never drank it until I got into EMS and those early mornings, late nights or simply no sleep makes coffee the winner hands down!!!!!
July 28, 2010 at 8:25 AM
Coffee, definitely!
At our house, we go so far as to roast our own coffee beans. The taste is so fresh, I’m enjoying some right now
Commercial fishing in Alaska sounds incredible. I’ve always wanted to go there. What’s the best time of the year to visit?
BTW, I will make sure to give all my loved ones, including my doggies, an extra big hug today
July 28, 2010 at 8:26 AM
I drink my black coffee with a side of coffee. If it wasn’t weird, I’d chew on coffee grinds. I am not a morning person.
July 28, 2010 at 9:05 AM
I am right there with you, girlfriend!FYI – Starbucks has chocolate-covered espresso beans that rock my world. Luckily I live over an hour from a Starbucks, so I don’t indulge too often. I am so not a morning person.
July 28, 2010 at 10:59 AM
you can also get them at Trader Joes!
July 28, 2010 at 8:39 AM
Coffee! Any weather, any season, any day of the week! Yum!
July 28, 2010 at 8:56 AM
Coffee! And that’s Starbucks coffee only.
Yeah, I know I’m a coffee snob but that’s what I get for growing up in the Seattle suburbs.
July 28, 2010 at 4:46 PM
In that case, I thought Seatle’s Best has the best coffee from Seattle….I mean it’s in the name. : )
July 28, 2010 at 8:56 AM
Coffee for caffeine, hands down. But, I’ll take decaf tea at night on occasion.
July 28, 2010 at 8:57 AM
TEAM COFFEE!!
July 28, 2010 at 8:59 AM
I am a coffee-before-I-can-function person. No matter what….
And we also watched the Deadliest Catch and it was really sad. We have been big fans of the show for a long time, and I always chalked it up as another testosterone-ey show until I started reading your blog and I felt connected, so I paid attention. I am off the computer to snuggle with my kids now!
July 28, 2010 at 9:02 AM
Coffee. I just love the taste.
July 28, 2010 at 9:11 AM
Coffee! And lots of it. We buy it 5 lbs at a time!
July 28, 2010 at 9:23 AM
I don’t drink any beverages in the morning. The first thing I have to have when I get up is food. I would die without breakfast first thing in the morning.
July 28, 2010 at 1:51 PM
I agree. I don’t understand people who say they don’t eat breakfast.
July 28, 2010 at 9:24 AM
Never got into coffee or tea. I head straight from the bed to the fridge for a Diet Coke on the rocks.
July 28, 2010 at 9:24 AM
STRONG coffee. Without it, I drag in the afternoon. There are times I think that maybe I should attempt to give it up, but I only drink one travel mug a day.
July 28, 2010 at 9:28 AM
Coffee. I’ve tried others but the effect on my plumbing is not the same.
Regarding Phil – I Love Him. I loved watching him parent Josh and Jake and I loved watching their personalities work together. There was never a doubt that they had love & respect.
We cancelled our cable the week before this season started and now I will watch it all on the computer. Probably better that way – I’ll cry my eyes out and need to stop to listen.
July 28, 2010 at 9:51 AM
An “epic” cup of coffee or 2 each morning.
July 28, 2010 at 12:31 PM
“nom nom nom”
July 28, 2010 at 3:31 PM
hahaha! after that post a few wks ago, i have been noticing more and more of those annoyances popping up, i swear!
July 28, 2010 at 9:51 AM
A strong cup of coffee in the morning, but hot tea and iced tea through out the day.
July 28, 2010 at 9:53 AM
diet coke.
and i drink hot green tea w/ nfm in the afternoons and in the winter to keep me warm.
even though its 95+ deg outside, they keep it like at 40 in this building.
July 28, 2010 at 9:54 AM
oh and honestly…water with lemon and A BOILED EGG for breakfast?
whatev’s.
July 28, 2010 at 10:07 AM
I’m a tea drinker. But my doctor recommended on cup of coffee a day for my IBS and so I drink it but then switch to tea. I miss it when I don’t have it.
July 28, 2010 at 10:09 AM
I, too, have gotten so hooked on DC. It was super emotional.
Also, hot water?!?! Serious?!?! There’s no way. I’d spit it out, sorry. I do enjoy hot tea though, but my guilt pleasure is iced/blended coffees
July 28, 2010 at 10:25 AM
Coffee Coffee- 1 – 1.5 a day and then 2 on weekends. But can’t drink before a race.
July 28, 2010 at 11:01 AM
I drink both tea and coffee. I definitely feel more of a buzz when I drink coffee though. But I like both equally. I definitely need some caffeine in the mornings otherwise I feel like poo!
July 28, 2010 at 11:05 AM
Coffee. Homemade lattes with skim to be exact. Starbucks was killing my bank account. A 1lb bag of espresso is $10 (+ a free coffee when you buy it), it lasts a LONG time and the latte winds up costing less than 50 cents rather than 3 bucks when you factor in milk! I do accounting for my day job, I might have done the math to figure out my savings
It’s almost like I’m making money instead of spending it!
July 28, 2010 at 11:07 AM
Coffee! I brew a pot as soon as I wake up in the morning.
Deadliest Catch is a great show- but all the stuff with Phil this season has been super sad. However, I am glad they are showing it with such honesty. Sadly it’s a good reminder that you never know when life will be cut short.
July 28, 2010 at 11:41 AM
No contest…. COFFEE! Lot’s of coffee!
July 28, 2010 at 11:47 AM
[...] here is a big shout out to Skinny Runner for featuring me on her awesome blog this morning. Go check it [...]
July 28, 2010 at 11:53 AM
CANNOT live without morning coffee! My husband knows it’s best not to attempt to engage me in conversation until I’ve had at least one cup!
July 28, 2010 at 12:07 PM
I attempted the “Lemon Tea” since tea and hot water certainly wouldn’t cut it, but the lemon tea didn’t work either. I’m all about the morning coffee!
July 28, 2010 at 12:24 PM
I’m a tea person. I have coffee once in awhile but I’m with Marisa on this one. I’ve never really gotten into the whole coffee thing.
July 28, 2010 at 12:54 PM
It’s all herbal tea for me! Yep, that’s right; not just tea; no…herbal tea. Boring, huh?
July 28, 2010 at 1:41 PM
Afternoon coffee (latte to be exact). I don’t drink anything in the a.m. — probably not the healthiest habit.
July 28, 2010 at 2:05 PM
sorry going to have to go with tea. i love the smell of coffee and coffee-flavored ice cream, but i can’t drink actual coffee!
July 28, 2010 at 2:05 PM
I NEED coffee in the morning – otherwise I will get a terrible caffine headache!
July 28, 2010 at 3:28 PM
COFFEE! i have 3-4 cups/ day, sometimes a cup in the afternoon, and usually more on lazy weekend mornings. it just tastes so damn good, but i love the ritual, smell, warm fuzzy feelings. kinda might die w/o it.
July 28, 2010 at 3:53 PM
i drink water..that’s it… (and alcohol on my fun nights out haha). once in a while i’ll have herbal tea at night, but i have never needed something to wake up or be alert, and i just wouldn’t want to be dependent on caffeine.
July 28, 2010 at 4:35 PM
Hi! Found your blog off runningwithsass.
Coffee! But only becaue I love coffee, not because I NEED it. I had no problems cutting it out when I was pregnant, and even now only have 1 or 2 cups, mixed half with skim milk.
July 28, 2010 at 4:43 PM
Girl, I don’t even know my own name without my cup of coffee! That is my one bad habit that I could never, nor would I want to (seriously, why would I?!?) ever give up. Trust me, for consideration of others (same reason I don’t karaoke), it’s best if I have at least one ginormous cup before interacting with anyone. : )
July 28, 2010 at 5:05 PM
I am a coffee drinker.. but would much rather have a MONSTER Energy drink.. but I am too cheap to buy them. Coffee is much cheaper.s
July 28, 2010 at 5:12 PM
I pay homage to the Dark Lord each and every morning, and then a little more midday and if I’m REALLY dragging ass, a little more afternoon. I LOVE the taste and found that the beans make a HUGE difference. I only drink Coatepec beans (in the state Veracruz (Mexico)) and have a crotchety old Italian who roasts them for me, and I Do Not Sully the bean with milk or sugar.
July 28, 2010 at 5:28 PM
I’m a PhD student still doing coursework, so every semester I get hooked on coffee like its crack, like, to stomach lining destroying levels. And then I quit every break, winter and summer, cold turkey, and then go back hard as soon as classes start. I drink tea occasionally all year, but to me they’re just different: its not tea OR coffee, because tea, while lovely, simply cannot replace the dark bitter nectar of the gods…
July 28, 2010 at 5:53 PM
I got that Shape magazine with her on the cover. I can’t believe she’s 40 something! I would never have guessed.

July 28, 2010 at 7:14 PM
i love me some coffee but since I’m so lazy and out of it in the morning I only have time to make some microwavable tea…I’m lammeee
July 28, 2010 at 7:20 PM
Sorry but i find the whole fishing thing you and your family are involved in disgusting and your pictures of those poor dying, dead, bloody fish even worse, boats full of them. Are you aware that these poor mamals can feel every bit of the torture you are subjecting them to. It is a very sensitive topic for many humans who care about our marine life. You do not show once ounce of remorse for them. Would you like if someone tortured you and then posted pictures of you in your dying moments, i doubt it.
July 28, 2010 at 7:34 PM
First of all, fish aren’t mammals, they are simply fish. Second, we aren’t torturing them; we dress them quickly in the most efficient way, not toying with them, purposely inflicting pain. Third, please don’t imply that I don’t care for marine life because I am a fisherman. Commercial fishing is an industry that is thousands upon thousands of years old, and it is because we abide by incredibly strict regulations, federal laws, and Fish and Game rules which regulate the industry to ensure that the species we catch will continue to thrive for thousands of more years.
The only correct thing you said in your comment is that yes, I do not have any remorse when I fish. It is my family’s livelihood and has been for at least 100 years. It is an incredibly difficult job; everything we do is to the letter of the law and completely legal, and to be honest, I’m pretty darn proud of it too.
Whether you like it or not, there is food chain in the circle of life and we humans are at the top of it. It is foolish to compare a human death to a fish; they are simply not valued the same which is why you can go sport fishing and not be charged with murder.
Thanks for your opinion, though, I always appreciate everyones.
July 28, 2010 at 8:51 PM
Huh. I really hate to follow that last comment with my lowly one.
I’m going to say, “go Sarah”. Way to take a stand.
Meanwhile I will bring the frivolous conversation from before back to the forefront (if that is possible) to say I am allergic to caffeine and chocolate. Sympathy here please. So I start my day with water or herbal tea and frequently skittles or cupcakes.
I lost my dad to a heart attack brought on by a lifetime of smoking Lucky Strikes. He was a Montana cowboy who regretted picking up that first cigarette but couldn’t ever stop. I told him every time I spoke to him he meant the world to me. He died at 65. His funeral was so packed it overflowed the funeral home into the the parking lot. A wonderful man.
Have a good night Ladies.
July 28, 2010 at 9:05 PM
Coffee…I usually have 2 cups a day. 1 cup right when I wake up…and usually a 2nd cup to-go as I’m running out the door to wherever. But I like tea too…if coffee isn’t an option
July 29, 2010 at 1:00 PM
I caught the last few minutes of the Deadliest Catch marathon and finale and I have to say I cried, and cried. I don’t watch the show that often – I do love it but I just never seem to remember when it’s on but it touched me and broke my heart. It also made me think of you – you are one tough cookie to get out there and do that and I hope that your family and crew members remember to play it safe! oxoxo
Wishing you and them many , and always happy and safe returns!!!
July 29, 2010 at 1:02 PM
blerrrg! I forgot to mention about the coffee – I was always an AM coffee drinker. One cup a day would do me in the AM when I got to work. However once I started working out I felt a bit better in the morning. On rough days I reach for the Joe but I’m not dependent on it.
If you could share some great low-no calorie ways to perk up coffee I’m all ears. I also stopped drinking it because I love it with real sugar only and lots of creamer – I might as well drink hot coco!!!
