WORKOUT – Kickboxing class ~ 1 hr
I am a complete loser when it comes to trying new workouts; I haven’t taken a class in years. So when my friend Jamie took me, I had to man up and try something new. And it was fun! Although I looked completely spastic I’m sure…
Tomorrow is the inaugural Dallas Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon.
So let’s check out some tips for beginning marathoners from Outside Magazine, courtesy of fitsugar.
- “Don’t wing it” when it comes to training. The active living magazine thinks it best to have a training plan. Here’s a half marathon training schedule and a four-month plan for a marathon.
- Training to run 26.2 miles takes commitment. Elite running coach Terrance Mahon told Outside, “The more consistent you are [with your training], the easier it will be to conquer the marathon.” Keeping a training log, suggests the mag, is a great way to stick to your plan and stay on track with your training.
- Olympic marathon bronze medalist Deena Kastor told the magazine, “You need to balance the workload with optimal rest.” So do “curb your enthusiasm” to avoid overuse injures that come with overtraining.
- The next best thing to a personal running coach, according to Outside, is a training partner. A running buddy “keeps you accountable” and you do “learn a lot by talking to other runners.”
- Don’t skip out on your long run, and every training plan, no matter the distance, has one long run a week. These long runs “prepare you both mentally and physically.” Kara Goucher told the magazine that long runs are the “most important workout that you do.”
For you marathoners and half marathoners, what are some of your go-to tips??

CROSS TRAIN!!! When I trained for my first marathon, I thought all I had to do was run and I ended up pretty injured.
I do boxing classes twice a week and we have just started to learn how to kickbox. Did you enjoy it? I adore these classes, they give me a better workout than I expected!
I always look like I’m flailing, not punching, in kickboxing class.
My favorite running recommendation is to wear 2 sports bras for more support. I’m an A-, but I still feel more comfortable running in 2 of them.
good luck tomorrow! you’re going to kick butt!
trust the plan! it’s something i have such a hard time doing too.
and sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep. a lot.
I was shocked when I saw that you did kickboxing today. I love kickboxing, it’s so fun and has the best mix of music.
my go to tip? immodium a.d. no one wants to cheer for the chump who pooped her pants. i take one before every race longer than 10 miles!
Good luck!! I’m a newbie runner, so I appreciated the tips.
I’ve been following/lurking for a while and I have to say that your commitment to running is very inspiring. I ran all through highschool up until I had knee surgery at the end oft freshman yer I college. I was able to pick up and start running again due to some complications. I have recently started again (as in the last week) and I find your blog very motivating. :0) Good Luck!!
