Fake it

WORKOUT – Ran outside in Dallas 1 hr 9 mins/8.1 miles

I haven’t done much running outdoors in Dallas, and I’m not sure if they changed the elevation to mimic Colorado’s since last time I’ve been here, but I was sucking air big time today.  I couldn’t catch my breath if it was speed walking.

At this rate I won’t be posting any world records in Sunday’s race.  But that’s ok because gold isn’t my color anyways… platinum, baby.

We’re staying with our friends in Plano who live about a half mile away from a nature preserve which made for a fabulous outdoor treadmill.

What’s your favorite outdoorsy race or place to run?

I’d probably say the Birch Bay Marathon up in Western Washington that I ran last month.

Since I live in West Texas, which has ugly scenery, my favorite running spot is in New Jersey where my MIL lives. It is in Westfield, NJ and is Nomahegan Park. The trail is a blacktop trail through the woodsy park that bypasses a small lake with a fountain, ya cross a bridge over a river, ya see deer on the path, and everyone is so polite and respectful of each other’s workout space. It’s so nice.

But if you read on the RNR website, it says ‘gradual’. I’m hanging on to that word. :)

I heard Arbor Hills was great, but haven’t ran there. If you have time, there’s also the Chisholm Trail through Plano. My favorite place to run is White Rock Lake in Dallas. Its 9.33 miles around the lake and always plenty to look at. As for hills… this is Texas… we don’t have hills like they have in California… we think speed bumps are mountains. ;-)

I did a lot of my training on the Chisholm Trail! Very nice, parks, lots of people running, dogs, etc. Highly recommend it.

I prefer trail running to city running, so my favorites are Cougar & Tiger Mountain (or the Redmond Watershed Preserve, which is closer to my house) in Washington.

When the snow melts this summer I want to get higher and run some of the trails I would normally hike – it would be amazing to run around with one of the volcanoes right in your face (like this: http://www.pbase.com/gtach/image/100823588)

I haven’t done too much running in random places, but I will say White Rock in Dallas, Town Lake in Austin, and Fairmount Park in Philly.

My cousins live in Plano! Well, actually one lives in Richardson with his family, but it’s right next door. I was there this past January! Fun!

I’m a big fan of running around this big lake right by LSU. I think I would have been a little scared to run that nature preserve all alone!

The wind today is pretty brutal too. I love that park. We used to live right by there. I would say White Rock is my favorite.

Random trivia – I’m from Plano, and spent a TON of time at that nature preserve in high school (and home for breaks during college). I loved it so much that my husband actually proposed to me there!! :)

Good luck on Sunday!

One of my favorite travel outdoor places to run was around the coast during a trip to Alaska in July at midnight. Beautiful!

If you liked Birch Bay, you should come do the Bellingham Bay marathon the end of September. Will you be done fishing then? It’s a nice course…some thru town, some by the water and some down a nice trail overlooking the bay.
