WORKOUT – Ran outside and on treadmill 14.55 miles/2 hrs 2 mins
This run was stupid. I planned to do at least 20 so I got up early, got all my crap together and drove to Dana Point Harbor.
I even put a Cytomax sports drink sample in my bottle. I’m ready to go!
Within .5 mile I was bored and wanted to quit.
Overlooking the harbor. It was pretty misty and foggy at 7am.
So I ran for an hour there, did some lovely hills, and then went to the most boring place in the world to run, the treadmill at the gym. And ran for an hour there. Still didn’t get anywhere near 20. blarch.
One of the hills that I ran up and down. It was steep, like Whole Foods prices-steep.
These houses on the hill overlook the harbor.
So I gave up running here to go run at the gym… and I don’t even know why. I just wasn’t feeling it, I guess.

The Garmin- To buy or not to buy?
JMJ and Diana asked about running watches specifically the garmin. Casi also asked about what running gear is necessary for a half marathon, and a garmin would definitely be on my list. My original review of the garmi 405 is HERE. If you have ADD and want the Cliff notes version: the Nike Ipod+ thing bites. I thought the garm was really hard to get used to and for what I used it for, I probably should have saved the money and got the 305.
Present Day: I would almost rather run without a sports bra than without my garmin…. and I’m no Kate Hudson. Since buying it in February, I have not ran once without it. I love it and would encourage everyone, except people I don’t like, to buy one. Here’s why:
1. I’ve NEVER had it lose a signal or not pick up one.
Ok I take that back. Sometimes when we shalk (shop while walking) the dog it will lose the signal when you get in the back of a big store like TJ Maxx. I haven’t ran a race yet where the course goes through a large clothing store so this isn’t a problem. Other than that, it’s never given me signal problems. One complaint I hear with the 305 is that it sometimes doesn’t pick up the signal at races, training runs, or where ever.
2. It’s obviously cuter and smaller than the older versions.
3. You can use it for a lot of different activities besides running.
It has biking and cross training settings as well. Besides running, I use mine occasionally walking the dog just to see how far we’ve gone. When we were hunting in North Dakota last month, I wore my garmin every day to see how miles we hiked. 35 in four days! 35 miles hiked! Try that on for size, Dean Karnazes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I didn’t buy the heart rate monitor, and I don’t use ALOT of the functions on the 405. You can wirelessly sync it up online, check out all your runs, and go to town making pie charts or whatever people do. I don’t do that because I only like pie, not charts. I use mine for 3 things:
a. Time – to see how long I’ve run
b. GPS distance – to see how far I’ve run
c. Pace – to see what pace I’m running
Those are the 3 numbers on the face of the watch, and that is all I use it for. Yes, it’s expensive. No, I don’t use it to it’s full capacity. Yes, the touch screen bezel thing is weird and takes alot of time getting used to.
BUT if I had to do it all over again, I would buy it for even more money. Honestly. If I bought anything for running besides a good pair of individually fitted shoes (to prevent injuries), I’d buy a garmin 405. I sometimes run without music but I never run without my garmin.
This was the first running watch I bought and first expensive running purchase. Because I’ve never used the 305 or 205, I can’t really comment on them. But to me, the GPS is why you buy the watch. You know it’s going to accurately tell your distance so if it can’t find a GPS signal, it’s somewhat pointless. At least that’s the way I see it.
Nicole got a 405 and loves it.
Any other readers want to share garmin love or hate?
Note: There is a new Garmin 405CX out. I talked to a Road Runner Sports employee who said there wasn’t much of a difference between the 405 and newer CX, although the new color is pretty….
“Also new is the Forerunner 405CX, an update to the company’s popular (and rather less offensive looking) Forerunner 405, adding “increased accuracy” in calculation of calories burned and comfort improvements to boot.”
Steals and Deals:
The cheapest I found online for a NEW, not refurbished, 405 is $299 at Road Runner Sports. Use the code CX19M327 for 10% off and free shipping. Or google “Road Runner Sports promo code” to see if there’s any newer or better promo’s out there.
For a 305, you can buy one at Amazon for about $158. Definitely cheaper.
You can get a refurbished and recertified 405 for about $232 online HERE.
Sorry to hear your run didn’t go so well. That just happens sometimes, like a bad rash. Not that I get bad rashes, but it could happen.
I have the Garmin 305HR (or whatever letters go with the heart rate one) and I love it. I’ve very rarely had problems with it picking up a signal and that was only because I thought it would be cool to run in the middle of no where. The only downfall is that I have tiny wrists and the thing is big. Not anywhere near as cute as the 405.
Hi there – I’m a huge lurker on your blog and finally stepping out of the wood work. First let me say i love your blog and with the help of my reader, never miss a post
I had to comment on this one because with my very minimal running experience, another good Garmin is the Garmin Forerunner 50 with footpod. I love mine.. it’s smaller than the 405 and waaay smaller than the 305 and the footpod clips right on to your shoe. All i wanted was to know my distance and pace/mile and time. Does all 3 and for the bargain price of $85.00 brand new on ebay. The only pain in the butt thing was that when i went to a track to calibrate it. A major plus – you dont have to worry about satelite reception because it’s all calculated by stride w/the footpod.
Hope that helps with your Garmin reviews!
I have the 305 and love it! I’ve only had a problem picking up the signal once (I was amongst very tall trees) and impatient to start my run. I eventually stopped for about a minute and it finally found the signal. Definitely a MUST have for any runner. The best price I’ve seen on the 305 is from http://www.costco.com (of course you have to be a Costco member).
I actually like the graphs (I’m a huge dork like that), anyone that is into that bypass the Garmin software IMMEDIATELY and download Sport Tracks (http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/SportTracks/) WAY better!
Honestly it is better you didn’t manage 20 miles especially if you’re doing Vegas on 12/6. 20 miles is too much mileage 2 weeks before a marathon. I am doing CIM on the same date and my long run is only 13 this weekend so you’re doing just fine.
I have the Garmin 305 and my hubby surprised me and bought me the 405 as a wedding gift last year. I actually didn’t like it and made him RETURN it! Shocking I know but that darn bezel thing threw me and comparing the two was just way too hard. They are TOTALLY different.
Now a year later and I am asking for the 405 again. I am willing to give it another shot because 305 is crapping out charging wise. Signal wise you just have to be patient, stand still and point your arm to the sky!
On a celebrity note (my other favorite past-time) no Fergie comment? I know you’ve seen skinnyvcurvy today . . . right?
PS: I am obsessed with the Hammer Apple Cinnamon gels . . . Cliffs destroy my tummy but that mocha flavor used to be yummy.
405 > 305
I’ve used both and consistently had trouble finding and keeping satellite signals on my 305. The 405 is a jewel by comparison.
Got my 405 last December…love it.
Nope, I don’t utilize mind like I could either, tried to sync it online and decided I wasn’t that fancy of a runner.
I do use the virtual partner, gets me moving when all else fails.
I love it, even more than my iPhone, and almost as much as my kids, so that says a lot.
Question for ya: What keeps you moving on your iPod?
i have the 305 and love it. like, i want to marry it and have tiny garmin babies. although i really dislike how HUGE it is, it hurts my wrist bone. other than that i’ve never had any problems with it finding signal, except for once in downtown OKC underneath a bridge and surrounded by tall buildings. anyways, love the 305. secretly lusting after the 405. so pretty and little and the color?? ohmygosh, so pretty.
Great post. I have the 305 and love it. Yes, it’s bulky, but I’ve adjusted by now. I don’t know if the 405 does this, but my 305 will flip between 3 different screens with 6 different readings. I use it for time, pace, distance, and elevation (hills here are killer).
Never a problem with getting a signal, either. The only thing I’d say I wish it had was the wireless syncing capability.
But I agree: you need good fitted shoes, and a Garmin. Music is optional.
I’m so glad you posted about Garmins! I’m super new to running and have set a goal to run a half in April (ample training time!) and have been looking into GPS watches like this. Like you, all I think I’d need is distance, pace and time.
I’ll definitely be sending the link to this post to my husband as a not-so-subtle hint that I NEED this for Christmas/half-marathon training.
Thanks!
I have the 405cx and L.O.V.E. it. I never have trouble getting a satellite signal, but I almost always have a problem with the heart rate monitor. I have tried everything: putting water under it, lotion, under my sports bra, lower near my waist, etc. It is soooo frustrating that I cannot get an accurate read of my HR. Anyone else have this problem? Any solutions?
I have the 305 and love it! Only drawback is the size of it. I haven’t used a 405 so i can’t say if one is better than the other, but certainly the asthetics of the 405 are better. I haven’t had problems maintaining a signal, but sometimes it takes a minute to get a signal when I start a run.
I just ordered the 305 from amazon.com last week and got it for $148. They upped the price like the day after I ordered it. I also got this adjustable wrist strap thing because of the issue with it being uncomfortable on small wrists. A bunch of runners around here swear by their 305′s so I figured I was safe with the satellite issues in my area. We’ll see how it goes. I usually train only by time (duration) and heart rate, so this will be interesting for me.
Thanks for the informative post, ‘preciate cha. I’m looking to enter the Garmin world here pretty soon. I need to run smarter and work on pace etc. I just go out and run as fast as I can for as long as I can. Not smart, I know.
